to Marry this Fall
Opens Season
The Center Symphony broke
with full force into their 18th
season with the rendering of
Beethoven's Symphony No. 3," in
its opening concert Tuesday
night in the Hyman C. Broder
auditorium.
The orchestra, which since
last season has changed in per-
sonnel, played as a primarily sat-
isfying, but sometimes uncoordi-
nated, group. With increased
hours of performing together, the
instrumentalists should reach the
unity evident in previous pro-
grams.
Under direction of Julius
Chajes, the orchestra conveyed
the organic themes, beauty of
transitions and magnetic pulse
characteristic of Beethoven
symphonies.
The concert included the pre-
mier Detroit performance of a
Chajes work, "Melody and Dance
for English Horn and Strings."
The composition, dedicated to
the memory of Henry Wineman,
a loyal supporter of the Center
Orchestra, was designed in two
sections, in minor key. An inter-
esting, Orientally flavored melody
was prominent in the work. The
elongated English horn solos
were most ably performed - by
Lare Waredrop, member of the
Detroit Symphony Orchestra.
A second solo performance was
submitted by Paul Olefsky, also
of the Detroit Symphony, in the
Boccherini "Cello Concerto in
B-flat Major." The piece enabled
the cellist to show his high
ability.
With quickness and sensitiv-
ity, Olefsky exhibited various
methods of utilizing his rich-
- sounding instrument. Whether
he was reaching fine ethereal
sounds with his fingering or ef-
fective double stops with 'is
bowing, his was a top quality
performance.
Olefsky gratified his hearers
with an encore selection, the
"Prelude to Suite in G Major"
by Bach. —S.R.K.
