Detroit Jewry Nlourns Passing of Dr. Aro nstam
Death Caine quietly early Mon-
day morning to Dr. Noah E.
Aronstam, one of Detroit's lead-
ing men of science and letters.
Although ailing for a year, Dr.
Aronstam, at 85, was still as
keen of mind as he was for dec-
ades when hs swift pen was
administering to the soul and
his sure hands were ministering
to the health of his fellow man.
He was a man of great learn-
ing and great healing, being both
a physician of the intellect and
the body.
Although he had given up his
medical practice a few years
ago, Dr. _Aronstam never ceased
writing. Only last Saturday night,
he corrected the proofs of the
poem, printed adjacent to these
columns.
As far as is known, unless
some unpublished writings
are discovered, this poem,
"Ifayom Harat Olam," is the
last of Dr. Aronstam's prolific
works.
He had been writing poetry
for The Jewish News for many
years. These works had been
devoted to great men of our
day, had recounted history, had
(Editor's Note: This is the last known unpublished
poem of Dr. Aronstam, for many years the unofficial Poet
Laureate of The Jewish News. It was written especially
for the Yom Kippur edition of this newspaper, and Dr.
Aronstam, only last Saturday night, had sent back the
proofs, which he had approved for publication. The poem
takes on added significance in view of Dr. Aronstam's
death on Monday morning.)
Hayom Harat Olam
(Today We Witness Eternity)
By DR. NOAH EPHRAIM ARONSTAM
Again we stand today at judgment's door;
Be we dominions, empires, nations or mere men—.
Yet peradventure submit we must
To higher laws that encompass us within their
mighty grip.
With grim fortitude we weathered
A multitude of pyres and crusades,
Passed through many a torment
And bloody maelstrom:
Per aspera ad astra!
This cry sustained us with courage on . our
March millenial
Aye with asperity to the stars!
Oh God of our fathers let us not weaken
At the threshold's line, nor yield,
But cleave to the prophecy of yore.
Inspired by faith and staunch in hope
That Israel will never falter evermore.
—Amen

passing six years ago.
The Aronstams' daughter,
Theodora Judith, the wife of Dr.
Luis Perelman, a New York psy-
chiatrist, and three grandchil-
dren, survive.
After graduation from medi-
cal school, Dr. Aronstam was in
general ' practice for several
years, and then went to Berlin
and Vienna for • post-graduate
studies in dermatology.
Returning to. Detroit, he estab-
lished his practice in the Fine
Arts Bldg., across from Grand
Circus Park. He was one of the
original tenants in the building,
and also one of the oldest prac-
ticing dermatologists_ in
Meanwhile, although his first
devotion was to his medical prac-
tice, Dr. Aronstam was creative-
ly busy. His essays on medicine
and his works on general themes
have been translated into many
languages, and have appeared in
numerous periodicals in this
country, other English-speaking
lands and in Israel.

14 States Act to Tighten
Discriminatory Practices
NEW YORK (JTA) — The
legislatures of 14 states this
year enacted civil rights legis-
lation as did the municipal gov-
ernments of San Francisco and
Los Angeles, the- American Jew-
ish Congress reported.
Four of the -states enacted
laws forbidding discrimination
in education, five forbade it in
housing, five banned bias in
public accommodations and two
amended existing anti-discrim-
inatory legislation to add en-
forcement provisions.

In 1902, in collaboration with
Louis James Rosenberg, Detroit
attorney, Dr. Aronstam wrote
"Sociologic Studies." He also au-
thored "Jewish Dietary Laws
from a Scientist's Viewpoint"
and a novel, "Lost Nation."
Dr. Aronstam will be remem-
bered for many contributions to
Jewish life and medical prog-
ress, but readers of The Jewish
News will always have a warm
remembrance of the many poems
which flowed from his heart and
told of the dignity of the indi-
vidual, the glory of man and the
destiny of God's chosen people.

One of his greatest triumphs
as an individual and as a life-
long Zionist came with the real-
ization of the re-born state of
Israel.
Dr. Aronstam had been in the
forefront of Detroit Zionist activ-
ities preceding the turn of the
century. He corresponded with
Theodor Herzl and kept close to
him at all times a yellowed letter
penned by Max Nordau.
Even before the formation of
the Zionist Organization of De-
troit, which he served as presi-
dent in 1917 and 1919, Dr. Aron-
stam organized a number of
Zionist societies.
