Samuel Dalva, aged 23, and Abra-
ham Rotenberg, 19, mechanical and
electrical engineering students, are
among the EgyptianJewish refu-
gees who were suddenly driven out
of their homes by the modern
Pharaoh in Egypt, dictator Nasser.
The universities where they studied
closed their gateS on them. The
following is a recent interview with
them at the Israel Institute of
Technology (Technion) in Haifa
where they are studying presently.

the Jews prior to Nasser's rise
to power?
A.: Jews came to Egypt dur-
ing the period of the FirSt and
Second Temple. There are those
who maintain that Jews re-
mained in Egypt from the time
of Moses, but most of the.Egyp-
tian Jews have come during the
last few generations. On the
whole, the Jews who came to
Egypt surpassed the Egyptians
in so far as their knowledge and
experience were concerned, so
that within a short time they
were able to prosper in Egypt
to their own and the State's
benefit. -

Q.: Did these circumstances
change with Nasser's rise to
power?
A.: Indeed it did; not immedi-
ately but gradually. The Jews
were dismissed from govern-
ment jobs, their movement from
city to city was restricted, and
Jewish organizations ceased to
exist.

Q.: How did the Sinai Cam
paign affect the Jews in Egypt?
A.: We heard of the begin-
ning of the action in Sinai over
"Kol Yisrael", (which we list-
ened to at the risk of personal
danger) a short time after the
"Voice of Cairo" gave the in
formation and reported that the
Egyptian army had gained a
brilliant victory over the Zion-.
ist enemy. During the first
hours we did not know what to
thin-k; yet up to that point no
harm had been done to us. Only
afterwards, while we were at
the university, did other infor-
mation begin to filter through,
to Egypt. Nationalist students
began to incite the spirit of war
which vms felt by everyone di-
rectly following the bombings.
Heated discussions were heard
on every side and we were in
the middle of it. The university
was closed and everyone had to
enlist in the "National Guard".
Those who refused were liable
to six months imprisonment.

dents, approached the President
of the university and asked for
his advice. He told us that
mobilization for the "National
Guard" was not obligatory for
the JeWs but if we requested it,
they would possibly take us. A
large part of the "National
Guard" had already been mobil-
ized as Fedayeen for the war
against the Zionists in Pales-
tine.

Q.: What was your reaction?
A.: Naturally we made no

such request, but by evening
we and our parents had been
placed in a concentration camp
and we were left with only the
clothes we were wearing. They
told us that the quicker we for-
got our belongings and homes
the easier it would be for us. 0
All that our families and other
Jews of Egypt had attained was
forfeited.

Q.: What were the reactions

of your fellow students?
A.: Friendship generally does
not recognize nationality bar-
riers. We had very strong ties
with the boys and girls with
whom we had studied for many
years. Our friendship grew
against the background of our
studies and common experi-
ences. They didn't believe what
they heard and for the most
part tried to encourage us by
saying that this was a decree
that would certainly be changed.
Yet outwardly, they were
obliged to say that this step was
necessary.
