never been of more striking
actuality than these days,
"Not in the warning by ex-
perience bought doth highest
wisdom lie; but 'to be fore-
warned arid not to fall — this is
highest wisdom," says Joseph
Ben Isaac Kirnhi (1103-1170).
Galuth Jews
"To be a Jew, means to be
in the Galuth everywhere,"
complains Franz Rosenzweig in
his letters published in 1935.
And he continues: "If the reli-
gious Jew is being attacked, he

must not use the holy Torah as
a protective shield, but should
stand before the Torah and pro-
tect the holy scrolls."

fur ancestors, in their rich
:piritual life, in their attitude
:,11 the burning questions of the
lay, have coined many fitting
phrases and eXpressions.

These phrases, so familiar to
earlier generations, seemed to
have sunk into oblivion. But
such oblivion lasted a short
period only. Now they are corn-
ing _alive again. •

Nahum, the Tannaite who coin-

In 1882,Juda. Loeb Pinkus, in
his much discussed book "Auto-
Emancipation" wrote: "To- be
looted because one is a Jew or
to be protected for the same -
reason — this is equally em-
barrassing for our human feel-
ings as Jews." •
In 1911, the famous novelist
Jacob Wasserman said in his
novel- "My" Way as "a German
and as a Jew: It is the great-
est - tragedy in the Jew's exist-
ence that two feelings are con-,
stantly conflicting in his tor-
tured soul; the feeling of supe-
riority and the feeling of stig-
ma." _
"Your certificate of baptism'
is your ticket to European cul-
ture," complains Heinrich Heine,
the apostate who, despite every-
thing, was a Jew to his last.
"Our new weekly has been
contemptuously called a 'Jew's
paper.' We know this word is
meant as an insult, but we shall
not fail to turn it into a Word
of honor," states Theodor Herz.1
in the first issue of "Die Welt"—
the Zionist paper he founded on
June 3, 1897.
Famous Sayings
The famous Jewish play-
wright at the turn of this cen-
tury, Ludwig Fulda, alio re-
nowned for his masterful trans-
lations of French and Nor-
wegian plays, states in his
"Proverbs in Prose": "If time
is money, then everybody with-
out exception lives far above
his means". In the same book,
he says: "Mortal man resembles
an actor who never knowS how
the play will end in - which be
is privileged to play a part
during one act only."
"A greater miracle than the
tough- _vitality of the Jew in
history is the preservation of
Jew - hate," writes Bernard
Auerbach in 1869. And the
same author coined the phrase
that b e m e world - famous:
"Music alone speaks a universal
language and needs no trans-
lation." ("On Heights," 1865).
On the Lighter Side
Here are a few Yiddish
proverbs, short and pithy: "Life
is the greatest bargain; you get
it for nothing." "Better an
honest petsch than a false kiss."
"Do you know from where the
often- quoted word "nebbich"
comes? It stems from the
Hebrew "nevuchirn" and means
"lost" or "mixed-up:" .Esrogim
after Sukkot—this means either
an offer that comes too late
or obsolete news! "Horst du —
halt; weyste du — schweg;
kennst •du— tu!" And last, but
not least: "Hire a servant and
do it yourself7
In Praise of Wisdom
All these quotations, proverbs
and sayings have been culled
from a vast storehouse of wis-
dom filled with inexhaustible
material. "If you have learn-
ing, you will never lose your
way." And the Almighty said
to Solomon: "Choose that
which thou dost prize above all
else." Unhesitatingly, Solomon
replied: "I would ask for Thy
daughter, Wisdom, then all else
will be mine."
King Ptolomy of Egypt once
asked a. wise Jew: "Why is it
that so few people strive after
wisdom?" And the learned Jew
answered: "Because most People
regard the acquisition. of wealth
as the chiefest goal; the wise,
however, know that riches
alone cannot bring happiness
and that the fruits of wisdom
are much more precious: for
they alone bring joy to the
heart and peace to the mind."
