Some Jews throw nuts at the
bridegroom on the Sabbath be-
fore the wedding.
This custom is mentioned in
the Talmud (Berakoth, 50a).
The commentaries explain it on-
the ;grounds of being a good
omen. Some claim that it is a
sign of plenty which would
signify the good wishes of the

congregants in wishing the
II bridegroom a life . of plenty.
Others claim that trees bearing
nuts blossom . and bear fruit
soon. Throwing the nuts would
indicate the wishes of the con-
0 gregants for a reproductive
marriage. In some places raisins
are added as a sign of sweet-
ness. In some places wheat ker-
nels are thrown as a symbol of
fertility.
