The country of Israel at dif-
ferent periods in history has
been known by other •
The conquering Israelites called
it "Canaan," rooted from the
name of its inhabitants, the
Canaanites.
The area was called "Philis-
tie," since the Philistines lived
on the southwestern coast, and
later in the north and east of
the country. The word "Pales-
tine" also derives from the
name, "Philistine."
During - the - days of the Sec-
ond Temple, the Jews lived in
the southern portion, then
called "Judah." The Jewish
commonwealth surrounding it
therefore became known as
Judea. The invading Romans
and Arabs revived the name
"Palestine:" •
Because the Bible contains
God's promise of Israel for
Abrahain and his descendants,
the country is called the "Pro-
mised Land." Since it has reli-
gious associations for thousands
of people, it is called the "Holy
Land."

"The Joker is Wild'

"The Joker is Wild," Joe E.
Lewis' screen biography, based
on the bestseller by Art Cohn,
with a screenplay by Oscar
Saul, will roll on Oct. 15, ac-
cording to producer Samuel J.
Briskin. Frank Sinatra, who
shows not the slightest resem-
blance to the poker-faced night-
club comedian, will portray him
in the motion picture. The story
covers Joe E. Lewis' career
from 1918 to 1933 and will focus
on the prohibition era, when
the entertainer defied gangdom
in Chicago and nearly paid with
his life for his principles.
