How will these new courses of events affect American Jewry's future? It is evident that we shall witness new developments in the coming few years, and even in the immediacy of the year 5718 • we may witness crucial metamor- phoses in Jewish life. . * * . * It is yet to be seen whether the mir- acle of the new State of Israel will have a very serious influence on American ar degree, how- Jewry's future. There is a greater inter- est in the Hebrew language and in the historic background of our people. There is a keen interest in the salutary Israeli efforts to encourage scientific and literary projects. In spite of the pressures that arise from the threats of her Arab neigh- bors, which place Israel on a continuous defensive and warlike basis, her people aspire to build new industries, to improve their school systems, to introduce research projects, to welcome new settlers and to strive for the improvement of human relations. These objectives leave their mark upon world Jewry. The approaching celebration of Israel's tenth anniversary surely will increase the bonds of kinship between Israelis and world Jewry and will serve to strengthen the latter's interest in Israel. . * * As Israel gains strength, energies that were primarily directed among the Jews of the world towards helping the new State will be released for the strengthen; ing of Jewish institutions in the various lands where Jews reside. That is why we may expect that there will a be nee- w d votion to Jewish idealism, a greater inter- est in Jewish cultural movements, a strengthening of our spiritual citadels. In spite of the concern that is being expressed over Jewry's future, we are confident that our spiritual values will be protected and our heritage will not be forsaken. We have faith that American Jewry's generosity will remain a shining light for ourselves and an example for others to follow. Surely, our communities will hold steadfastly to established traditions of caring for the needy and of providing the finest educational facilities for our chil- dren. On this Rosh Hashanah, we hold to the conviction that. American Jewry will remain a spiritual force among its neigh- bors and will, at the same time, continue to uphold the hands of our freedom-seek- ing kinsmen who are determined to create in Israel as strong a libertarian center and atmosphere as we enjoy in our own great land. In this spirit of confidence in a good future, we extend our best wishes for a ,-sivsketah-Tamak to here.
