TEL AVIV, (JTA) — Israeli
air, armor and artillery units
participated in the largest air-
borne operation ever under-
taken in Israel. Observers who
witnessed the war games com-
pared the exercise with the
Mitleh Pass battle where Israeli
paratroopers, dropped deep be-
hind the Egyptian lines, held
the vital Sinai pass until major
ground units arrived.
The setting for the operation,
witnessed by senior army of-
ficers and Western military at-
taches in Israel, was a hilly re-
gion. Large numbers of para-
troopers were dropped, together
with heavy mortars, jeeps, plas-
ma and other medical supplies.
Then, with the support of ar-
tillery and- tanks, the- flying in-
fantrymen swept forward to
overrun an "enemy" strong-
hold.

Through the ages there have,
of course, been many musical
settings to the Ma'oz Tsur poem,
ascribed to a poet "Mordecai,"
from an acrostic in the poem.
Whether this was the 13th cen-
tury Mordecai ben Isaac ha-
Levi, or the Mordecai of 1096
we do not known for certain .
