Hold Cornerstone Event
for Israel Boy's Town

JERUSALEM (JTA) - The
cornerstone of the first struc-
ture of an anticipated 15-build-
ing educational -center to be
operated here by Boys' Town,
Jerusalem, was dedicated at a
ceremony attended by Israeli
government and religious lead-
ers, a representative of the
United States Embassy and
others.
The building, which will be
an industrial arts home for 140
boys, will be located on a 10-
acre site between the new
Hebrew University campus and
Hadassah Hospital.
The institution, supported by
an American committee headed
by Ira Gulden of New York,
combines religious and voca-
tional education for boys. It
has been in operation for the
past four years.

weight championship.

"Never has a" man accom-
plished so much, suffered so
much, gone down so low only
to come back so high," says
Eddie Cantor in his foreword
to "No Man Stands Alone: The
True Story of Barney Ross."
The dramatic story, which J.
B. Lippincott Company will
publish on Oct. 16, has been
written by Barney Ross in col-
laboration with Martin Abram-
son.

Cantor reveals that Barney
tried to lead a volunteer army
to help the young democracy
of Israel in its darkest hour,
and was stopped only by the
red tape of diplomacy.

and return to the little ortho-
dox synagogue where he prayed
as a boy.
During World War II, Bar-
ney's medal - winning . exploits
with the Marines on Guadal-
canal won him new fame. But
an over-dose of drugs for the
severe wounds he suffered, re-
sulted in his addiction to nar-
cotics, and plunged him to the
very depths of despair. It was
during this period that his re-
ligious faith withstood its se-
verest test, and proved its
strength in helping him to
conquer the dreaded addiction.
He has appeared before the
United States Senate commit-
tee hearings on the narcotics
problem, and continues to wage
a one-man campaign to help
the nation's alarming number
of addicts.
Barney carries his religious
books with him wherever he
goes. He is a tireless worker,
a fervent patriot, and a devoted
husband and son. His mother,
now 83, is living in the Jewish
Orthodox Home for the Blind
in Chicago, and vividly recalls
the Friday nights she walked
half-way across Chicago to
watch Barney fight, and then
walked home again. She re-
fused to break the Sabbath by
riding, and she became a fa-
miliar sight on those Friday
night walks, trailed by the
neighborhood kids who idolized
her son.

JERUSALEM (JTA) - In-
come taxes in the fiscal year
of '1956-57 yielded 180,000,000
pounds, an increase of 26,000,-
000 over the previous year.
Some 432,000 taxpayers con-
tributed to this record sum, in-
cluding 270,000 salaried people,
149,000 self-employed Israelis
and 6,370 companies. Security
taxes added 43,000,000 pounds
more to government revenues

Barney Ross was born in the
Chicago ghetto, the son of
"Reb" Isidore Rasofsky, a Tal-
mudic scholar who came to
America to escape the Russian
pogroms. Barney was a sickly
asthmatic boy and was study-
ing to become a Hebrew teach-
er when his whole life was
abruptly changed by the mur-
der of his father. Bitter, sick
with grief, he turned his back
on religion. He started boxing.
It was an outlet for his emo-
tional tumult and a means for
earning money to help support
his family, and to eventually
reunite them. Not until he won
the championship did he open
