Van Paassen, Here for Israel Bonds, i Committee of 25
Urges Women to Save Fellow Jews Chosen, for 25th
Dr.• Pierre van Paassen, world die Eastern struggles, stated he Balfour Concert
famous author, a great Christian would write another dozen to
theologian who fought the Nazis,
appeared in Detroit on behalf
of Israel Bonds, Monday, to ad-
dress the Detroit congregational
sisterhoods" gathering at -Tem-
ple Israel.
Van Paassen, who was
among the first to expose the
anti - Jewish Arab Grand
Mufti, urged the gathering to
raise the maximum funds for
refugee aid. In a speech which
sympathized with the 100,000
Jewish "wanderers" who have
been "robbed of their Iasi pos-
sessions and driven out from
half a dozen countries," the
author stressed the need for
refugee aid monies.
The majority of the world
has been indifferent to the ref-
ugees' plight, he observed.
World Jewry must come to their
rescue, since it is only Jews who
will extend effort to save their
fellow Jews, he asserted.
To strengthen the impact of
his plea, the author quoted
Hebrew and translated his
chosen phrases. "The Jews
have always been the people
of nierey, rahmanim bni rah 7
manim," he declared.
When Moses read out the tab-
lets received on Mount Sinai,
the Children of Israel replied,
"naaseh venhishmah, we will do
and we will listen." Tradition
says that Jews of all times
swear, "we wiH do, naaseh,"
Van Paassen reminded.-
He urged the audience "to
do, to perform, to act" so as to
save Jewish lives.
Israel needs outside funds to
aid her in refugee rescue since
she is struggling to keep a solv-
ent economy. If the tiny country
should spend her financial re-
sources for, rescuing Jews, 'the
would
ould face a break-
down. "Such a breakdown
woukl be an invitation -for Arab
armies to walk in," he warned.

attract "s o m e people from
watching television or playing

the pressing refugee problem.
He denounced the hardhearted
and the cynical.
The Jewish sympathizer
pointed out how Jews are yet
"the most plausibly available
scapegoats when anything goes
wrong." He cited as example,
King Hussein's- baseless blame
of Jews. In his dread of being
assassinated by someone from
the poverty stricken Jordanian
masses, he throws on the Jews
the blame for his every diffi-
culty, Van Paassen declared.
Citing statistics of displaced
Jews, the author noted that 120,-
000 Jews from Hungary will try
to emigrate this year. The JDC
is spending $15,000 a • day for
12,000 Hungarian refugees in
Austria already, he reported.
In Marseilles, there is a
backlog of 5,000 North Afri-
can Jews still in a camp.
Meanwhile there are 2,000
more coming in per month.
There are 40,000 Jews in Iran
pleading to get out. But there
they must wait. There isn't
. enough money to begin evac-
uating them ... And we can't
forget the 30,000 victims of.
Hitler's terror who are _Still
in European camps, he ex-
claimed.
Recalling the incident of two
American Point Four workers
killed by Iranian bandits, Van
Paassen described the terrifying
and degrading conditions under
which refugees must live. In
concluding, he admonished the
audience to end "this story of
silent -dread."
