of arms is not the best way to
peace." The best weapon for
fostering peace is supplying
food, he declared.
He disclosed Israel had asked
the Eisenhower administration
for surplus food for 1957 and
1958 of an approximate value
of $100,000,000, double the
amount Israel was provided
during 1955 and 1956. He said
the Israel request for the next
two years, like that of the pre-
vious two, was mainly for
wheat, corn, beef, dry milk but-
ter and edible oil, adding he
would support the request be-
cause he had become convinced
during his visit here that Israel
was making excellent use of
such American aid.

TEL AVIV — Israeli officers,
accompanied by United Nations
observers, began an investiga-
tion Wednesday of a series of
Syrian gunfire attacks on Israel
tractor operators Tuesday in the
Tel Katzir settlement, which
had previously been one of the
quietest sections along the Sy-
rian border.
The Israeli officers reported
on the basis of initial findings
that the Syrians took up posi-
tions in Israeli territory, from
which they opened fire on a
group of Israeli workers, none
of whom suffered casualties.
Normal field operations were
resumed Wednesday morning in
the area Southeast of Lake
Tiberias.
