WJC Pamphlet Shows
1-low USSR Encouraged
Polish Anti-Semitism

V

Moscow's role in fanning the
tames of anti-Semitism in Po-
land is desCribed by the World
Jewish Congress in a new pub-
ication issued in New York by
its Institute of Jewish Affairs.
The 40-page document, "Po-
land After 'October' " , contains
a large number of reports and
pinions - on Polish develop-
ments since October 1956, writ-
en by top observers and corre-
pondents, many of them Polish,
thers American. British, Ger-
ian, Israeli and Swiss.
The Polish press, the World
Jewish Congress document
notes, reported on several oc-
casions Knishchev's anti-Semi-
tic statement vis-a-vis ' Polish
leaders. When he went to War-
saw in October, 1956, he was
reported• to have said: "We have
come in, order to prevent you
from delivering Poland into the

t

hands of the Americans and

Zionists."
Despite Gomulka's attempts
and pledges to stamp it out,
anti-Semitism became an open
development and Jews began
to leave, the pamphlet reveals.
eir departure found Gomul-
a's official paper "Trybuna
udu" r u e f u l l y expressing
nderstanding of their desire to
lo. The exodus began to mount
n the latter part of 1956, ex-
tending into 1957 and includ-
ing former top government offi-
cials, leading engineers, scien-
tists as well as unskilled work-
ers and • their families. They
went mainly to Israel.

Hyman Honored Prior

to Return to Israel

NEW YORK, (JTA) - Leaders

The Israel 'Cabinet. approved
the appointment of Simcha
Pratt as Consul General in
New York. Pratt. who served
as -Israel Consul in Chicago until
recently. was originally sched,
uled for the post of Councellor
in the Israel Embassy in Mos-

COW.

However. because the Foreign
Ministry could not find any
suitable candidate to replace
Hyman, it was decided to assign
Pratt to the New York post.

Jews May'Clairn Homes
Nationalized in Hungary

NEW YORK, (JTA)-Former

Hungarians now living in the
United States may reclaim
homes and apartments nation-
. alized by the Hungarian gov-
ernment in 1950 and 1952. The
' World Jewish Congress in New
York has been informed that
recently promulgated laws per-
mit the return of nationalized
dwellings up to six rooms.

Jewish Conference Not

Involved in Claims Sought

By European Governments

MUNICH, (JTA) - The pro-
test of Britain, France and other
European governments against
the refusal of the West German
government to include victims
of Nazi persecutions from their .
countries among the beneficiar-:
ies of Germany's indemnifica-
tion legislation has no connec-
tion whatsoever with the
Conference on Jewish Material
Claims Against Germany, it was
pointed out here.

' Haifa by Solel Boneh, Hista
drut's construction subsidiary,
