U. of W. Adds Hebrew

MILWAUKEE, (JTA) — A
four-credit course in beginners' .
Hebrew will be given at the
University of Wisconsin branch
in Milwaukee next fall. The
course will be taught by Dr.
William Furie, director of the '
Milwaukee Bureau of Jewish
Education.

A Jewish brother and sister
were linked this week to the
legend of Hiawatha, the story
related in the famous poem by
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
In the poem, a friend of Hia-
watha's by the name of K•as-
ind was chasing a beaver and
fell over Tahquamenon Falls in
Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Up
to last Sunday, he was the only
person said to have survived
such a fall.
Now in that exclusive, if
somewhat nerve - shattering,
company are Richard and Doris
Robins, children of Mr. and Mrs.
Ben Robins, of 3274 Tyler, who
also took the plunge and sur-
vived. The falls are 42-feet high.
The unscheduled event oc-
curred when Richard, a 23-year-
old Wayne State University stu-
dent. and Doris, 14, were seek-
ing to get back across the 200-
foot wide river which leads to
the falls. They had originally
crossed under the falls and "had
gotten all wet."
Seeking a way to avoid an-
other drenching and not wish-
ing to hike four miles to the
nearest crossing, the pair
started across the river in a
spot 100 feet from the falls
where they were told it was
safe to cross.
They were in water only a
foot deep when the strong cur-
rent swept them off their feet
and they were plummeted over
the falls.
They miraculously landed in ,1
deep water in the only spot '
where there are no jagged rocks
projecting from the foot of the
falls. Both are excellent swim-
mers and had no trouble
reaching shore.
Several hundred screaming
vacationers witnessed the inci- •
dent which caused Richard and
Doris only a few minor
scratches.
