Appeals has ruled in reversal
of a loweir court decision in-
volving religious teaching in
the schools.
The decision was of special
interest to the Jewish commun-
ity since, under the Quebec
school law, the religious major-
ity group in any school district
has the responsibility for edu-
cation of all school-age children
in its district. In the case that
the high court acted upon, chil-
dren of a member of Jehovah's
Witnesses had been ordered to
leave the Roman Catholic school
after they had refused to take
part in religious instruction and
practice. The father applied to
the courts for an order requir-
ing the school to readmit the
children and exempt them
from religious instruction.
The Superior Court at Ames
rejected this application, hold-
ing that religious instruction
was part of the school curricu-
lum and must be taken by all
students. The Court of Appeals
reversed this decision and
granted the father's application
by a six-to-one decision. Three
of the justices called for an
amendment of regulations gov-
erning the Quebec•Roman Cath-
olic schools, since they contain
no dispensation for religious
training of non-Catholics who
attend schools under Roman
Catholic boards. They said the
Roman Catholic committee, in
making these regulations. "ex-
ceeded the powers given to that
committee under the act."

Dr. Fox accused modern Je
of assimilating from Christi

pointed out that Judaism h
little in common with the Chri

can be redeemed only by Gods
grace.
"Modern Jews have also been
influenced by the Christian con-
cept of the role and function of
the spiritual leader," Dr. Fox
said. "The rabbi has become a
pastor and preacher, like the
minister. In traditional Judaism
the rabbi was a teacher and a
pastor only in the most limited
sense. There is an enormous dif-
ference between teaching - and
preaching. The rabbi is no
longer a teacher—which was his
main function in traditional
Judaism."

WILDACRES, N. C. — The
American rabb. is respected for
his skill in "oratorical contests"
rather than for "his ability to

philosophy professor told a Bnai

Dr. Marvin Fox, a member of
the Ohio State University fac-

life and teach . ngs of Maimon-
ides, said Amefican Jewish con-
gregations "have moved the

are completely out of harmony

Dr. Fox deplored what he
termed an achievement in the
synagogues of "an outer for-
mality with no inner content."
The greatest challenge to Juda-

total indifference of American
Jews to basic questions of Jew-
