Israeli Mintary Hero - Visits Faintl y in Detroit

One of Israel's leading gen-
erals Was 'given a hero's wel-
come by his family here dur-
ing a visit last weekend.
He , is Gen.. Yigal Alon, the
man who carried out the Sinai
Campaign last year and who
also defeated the Egyptian
forces during the Israel War of
Independence in 1948.
Gen. Alon, a third generation
Israeli, was in Detroit to spend
two days with his family, Dr.
and Mrs. Maurice Pike, of Sagi-
naw, Rose and Leah Pike, teach-
ers in the United Hebrew
Schools, and Mr. and Mrs. Sam
Z. Davidson, of Tuxedo Ave.,
with whom he stayed.
The general was also enter-
tained at a dinner party for 30
guests given by another rela-
tive, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Prov-
izer, of 22211 Marlow, Oak Park.
He had come here from Bos-
ton after participating in the

Seminar, sponsored by the uni-

eign lands a glimpse of life in

cally about the results of the
victory in Sinai.
He revealed how Israel mili-
tary intelligence had learned
that Egypt was planning an in-
vasion of Israel in only a few
weeks before Israeli troops
moved into the Sinai Peninsula.
Swiftly mobilizing its re-
serves, Israel swung into ac-
tion. Gen. Alon said that there

that, he said.
"Before Sinai," Gen. Alon
stated, "the world thought little
of Israel and its day to day
struggles. Afterwards we were
respected for gaining a resound-
ing victory. It is only too bad,"
he continued, "that the world
learned respect for us because
I of our military victories and
not for our irrigation, resettle-
ment, education and industrial
progress." •
Despite this newly-gained re-
spect, Israel will still have its
problems when the General As-
sembly resumes next month. He
feels that he is speaking for the
average Israeli when he accuses

American leadership, too,
Gen. Alon believes is question-
able. Israelis took a dim view
of the American stand immedi-
ately after' the war in Sinai.
Gen. Alon believes that Presi-
dent Eisenhower was "wrong"
and that Secretary of State
Dulles was "absolutely wrong."
As long as there is no fight-
ing, however, Gen. Alon con-
cluded, there is always the
hope of establishing peace.
An armistice may be some
distance away, but if there is
no fighting we can at least
accomplish our goals.

Before leaving for home on
Monday, Gen. Alon had an ap-
pointment to meet with Gen.
S. L. A. Marshall, whom he met
while the latter was in Israel
doing a study of the Sinai war-
fare. He then flew to London to
meet his wife before returning
to his kibbutz in Israel.
