Bnai Moshe Plans
Auxiliary, Suburb
Holy Day Services
Plans are now being made by
Cong. Bnai Moshe for its High
Holy Day services, to be held
Sept. 26 and 27 and Oct. 5. In
addition to regular services in
the main sanctuary, there will
be supplementary and suburban
services.
The supplementary services
will be held in the social hall
of the Dexter and Lawrence
congregation. Rabbi Emanuel
Applebaum and Cantor A. A.
Rosenfeld will officiate.
Dr. Seymour Fox, assistant to
the president of the J e w is h
Theological Seminary in New
York, will return to conduct
suburban services, to be held in
the auditorium of Oak Park
High School, Oak Park Blvd.
at Coolidge.
According to Harry Gunsberg,
first vice-president of the con-
gregation, Dr. Fox is considered
one of the outstanding young
rabbis in the Conservative
movement.
"He will be remembered,"
Gunsberg said, "by those who
attended services last year, for
coming down after se r v ic es
from the pulpit to lead discus-
sion on concepts on Conserva-
tive Judaism." Rabbi Fox will
be assisted by Cantor Moshe
Purjes, who recently came to
the U. S. from Israel.
Members will receive admis-
sion cards in the mail. Non-
members may contact the syna-
gogue office from 9 to 5, for
regular or auxiliary services.
Cards for suburban services are
available by calling Eliot Ras-
kin, LI 6-2838, or the synagogue
office, TE 4-5897.
Attempted Mushroom
Synagogue Forestalled
Announcing the forestalling
of this season's first attempted
establishment of a mushroom
synagogue, community leaders
simultaneously called upon De-
troit Jewry to patronize exist-
ing year-round synagogues dur-
ing the High Holy Days.
The project to set up a store-
front synagogue was prevented
by the joint action of the Vaad
Harabonism and the Jewish
Community Council. Rabbi
Leizer Levin, chairman of the
Vaad Harabonim, affirmed the
action for the Council of Ortho-
dox Rabbis, and Samuel J.
Rhodes, president of the Coun-
cil, and Louis Rosenzweig,
chairman of the Council's in-
ternal relations committee, af-
firmed the Council's position.
The Vaad and Council leaders
pointed out that attempts to
organize congregations only for
the High Holy Days undermine
the existing year-round houses
of worship, and that such enter-
prises lead to loss of Jewish
community prestige and self-
respect.
