around here, as a matter of fact,
is Col. Seymour Kaplan, the
wing's comptroller.

To the untrained, it would
seem like, flying one jet or
another would -be comparable
to driving any make of car, but,
as one pilot explained changing
from the F-84 to the F-86 is like
"driving a Cadillac after being
behind the wheel of a truck."
After the wing returns to
Selfridge Field, their home
base, this weekend, the men
will continue training in the
new plane.
Besides the two weeks of
training, members of the wing
are required to serve one week-
end a month in training at Self-
ridge. The men come from as
far as Flint and Grand Rapids
to fulfill these requirements.

Training for Conversion to Supersonic Jets

By FRANK SIMONS
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The only
thing hotter than the weather
down in this Southern metropo-
lis is a group of "jet jockeys"
who constitute Michigan's 439th
Fighter Bomber Wing, a reserve
Air Force outfit more popularly
known as the Wolv-Air-Ines.
. The 439th is at the Municipal
.Airport here to convert from
the F-84 jet fighter to the super-
sonic F-86H Sabrejet. The tran-
sition is designed to give Michi-
gan adequate air protection in
the event of enemy _attack.
Typical of the jet pilots in the
439th is Maj. Kal Gladstone, of
21601 Sussex, Oak Park; who
has been flying for the Air
Force since World War II days.

Maj. Gladstone compiled
quite a record for himself
while flying P-47's with the
U.S. Eighth Army out of Eng-
land in the war. He holds
five Air Medals, countless
battle stars and a Disting-
uished Unit Citation to men-
tion only a few.

But, Gladstone, like all of the
other men down here, are too
busy working on the new F-86
to reminisce much about the
past.
While here on two weeks of
training duty, which began Aug.
4, each pilot is expected to
complete two and a half days
of ground school learning the
pOtential of the Sabrejet.
After this he checks out and
has two rides with an instructor
following in a chase plane.
From here on, the pilot is on
his own, but he must compile
15 air hours of solo flight be-
fore he is through.
There is not much room for
error in the transition period,
since all of the Sabrejets are
single-seaters. Yet, the 439th is
working to receive its fourth
Air Force Flying Safety Award,
presented to wings with no-
accident records.
The Wolv-Air-Ines, under the
command of Col. James H. Mc-
Partlin, of Birmingham, earned

U. S. Extends Insurance on
American Israeli. Investmens

(Direct JTA Teletype Wire to The Jewish New's)

JERUSALEM—An agreement extending United States Gov :
ernment insurance for American investments in Israel to include
protection against war damages was signed here Tuesday by
Israeli Foreign Minister Mrs. Golda M_eir and William 'Baxter,
United States Charge d'Affaires.
The new agreement is an expansion of a 1952 pact by which
the U. S. Government insured such investments against nation-
alization, expropriation and freezing of dollar earnings.
The insurance is provided through the International Coopera-
tion Administration's foreign investment guarantee program.

There has been no report that

Egypt had dropped out because

While a student at Mumford,
Pfc. Lewis was a track star.
Although an outstanding swim-

The competition started Mon-
