added importance this year
when Israel is faced with the
task of integrating into its eco

Council Supports
Civil Rights Bill

The Jewish Community Coun-
cil has renewed its support for
passage of "an effective civil
rights bill during this session
of Congress."
In a statement expressing
"real regret" at the Senate's
adoption of the jury trial
amendment, Samuel J. Rhodes,
president of the Council, re-
called that the Council has
"consistently joined with other
Detroit groups 'in seeking to
guarantee the rights of all
Americans.
Rhodes called attention • to
the statement issued recently
in New York by 16 national
agencies urging passage of
"even this disappointing ver-;
sion in order to insure some
form of civil rights legislation
at this session of Congress."
Among the 16 agencies was
the National Community Re-
lations Advisory Council, with
which the Detroit Jewish Com-
munity Council is affiliated.
The Council has commended
Senator Potter - and Senator
McNamara on their work in
behalf of civil rights legisla-
tion, "with the hope that some
means will be found to streng-
then the present bill in the
Senate-House conference."
