The former Court Photogra-
pher to King Albert and Queen
Elizabeth of Belgium, Samuel
Polak, died Aug. 6, in Brussels,
at the age of 75.
Mr. Polak, who before the
war was active in numerous
Jewish causes, only recently
had been awarded the Gold
Palm of the Order of the
Crown for a lifetime of out-
standing professional achieve-

His daughter, Mrs. David B.
Levin, wife of a Detroit manu-
facturer's representative, and a
grandson, William, are among
his survivors. He also leaves

Born in The Hague, Holland,
Mr. Polak came to Brussels at
the age of eight. As a young
man he became interested in
photography and soon became
the leading photographer in
Belgium.
It was on the basis of his
reputation as a master of por-
traiture that he was commis-
sioned by Belgiurri's Royal
Family. Thereafter, he became
their official court photogra-
pher.
During World War II, the
entire Polak family was in-
terned by the Nazis at Malines
concentration camp. They were
liberated together by the Al-
lies.
After the war, with all his
studio possessions having been
looted by the Nazis, Mr. Polak
did only custom work and jobs
for other photographers.
Recently, he received a prize
for a picture Fie
-
had done be-
fore the war. He had forgotten
completely about the French
competition, but his work had
been rewarded some 15 years
later.

Yeshivah Library
Founder Is Dead
Mrs. Betty Wagman, who
passed away on July 31, was
the founder and sole supporter
of the Julius Wagman Library
of the Yeshivath Chachmey
Lublin.
The library, named after Mrs.
Wagman's son, is relatively un-
known in the community, al-
though it has been in existence
for over five years. It contains
a great number of important
Jewish books, which are used
by students of the Torah acad-
emy.
According to her family, the
library was Mrs. Wagman's
main love in life. She had been
active in communal affairs in
her earlier years, but later she
devoted herself exclusively to
philanthropy, mainly the • li-
brary.
Her survivors, a son, Maurice;
four daughters, Mrs. Manuel
Sezelsky, Mrs. Cecelia Ruza,
Mrs. Anna Nager and Mrs.
Fannie Friedman; her 12 grand-
children and 20 great grandchil-
dren, plan to continue her work
in maintaining the library.
