Jetvish. Publisher's U. S. Posters
on Display- at Historical Museum

• A special exhibition of Amer- '
ican posters compiled by Levi,
Berman. New York publisher
of a Yiddish publication, is cur-
rently on display at Detroit's
Historical Museum. The ex-
hibibit, which includes over 70
famous American posters, will
travel to 20 U.S. cities follow-
ing the showing which ends
here on Sept. 17.
The exhibit features the old-
est known American poster ad-
, vertising the "Great Natural
Curiosity—The Great India
Elephant." The poster boasting
of the 7,000-pound animal was
printed in 1832, when such pub-
licity was the single most im-
portant item in the circus
budge t. Many other circus

posters are included in the ex-
hibit.
The collection also contains
an original Toulouse-Lautrec
poster designed for an Ameri-
can firm. The poster, a line
drawing for the Ault and Wy-
berg Ink Co., is the only one
Lautrec ever created for a com-
pany in this country.
The exhibit, called "Posters
U.S.A." is organized into nine
categories. The largest. "Bright
Lights" presents over 30 posters
devoted to the theater and its
stars. Other sections show min-
strels with their colorful cos-
tumes and ingenious musical in-
struments, including a coffee
pot; the pretty girl. who with
the child is shown selling hun-
dreds of American poducts: re-
cruiting posters. fashion posters
and a group of miscellaneous
posters.
The collection's owner. Levi
Berman, spent over 30 years
assembling more than 5,000
posters. Some were purchased
from other collectors, others
rescued from attics and barns.
Today the complete collection
is housed in the third floor
loft of an old building on New
York's Union Square.
Discovered by American
Heritage, the posters became
the subject of an article in
the historical society's Dec.,
1955 book-magazine.
