Farband Presents
Israeli's Portrait
to Hyde Library
HYDE PARK, N.Y., (JTA) —
A portrait of the late President
Franklin D. Roosevelt, done in
stone which simulates marble,
was presented to the library of
the President by the Farband-
Labor Zionist Order, a fraternal
organization dedicated to
strengthening Jewish life in this
country and in Israel.
The work was executed by
Shmuel Toker, an Israeli artist.
Toker has developed a method
of mixing stone, cement and
plaster in a manner that he says
controls form in designs and
colors of his choosing. He says
it enables him to do paintings
that resemble oils. Louis Segal,
general secretary of the Far-
band, presented the portrait to
the Franklin D. Roosevelt Lib-
rary on behalf of his organiza-
tion. It was accepted by Mrs.
Franklin D. Roosevelt, widow
of the President.
In his presentation address,
Segal declared that "there has
never been a greater champion
for the rights of all minorities
and the oppressed than Frank-
lin D. Roosevelt." He emphasiz-
ed that the presentation of the
portrait is " a symbol of the
deep and lasting friendship
which has been forged in recent
years between the people of the
State of Israel and our beloved
United States."

PHILADELPHIA, (JTA) —
Rabbis in the Philadelphia area
were urged to help combat the
Philadelphia "black market - in
babies.
The appeal was made by Al-
fred J. Goldsmith, president of
the Association for Jewish
Children, an agency set up
by the Federation of Jewish
Agencies.
"The demand for children is
now the greatest social problem
besides old age, in the United
States , " Goldsmith asserted. - In
1956, alone, the Association had
over 300 requests for babies.
The need for babies far ex-
ceeds the supply."
Goldsmith noted that al-

Bulgarian Failure
to Repay El Al
(Direct JTA Teletype Wire

govern-
ment of Bulgaria was sharply
critized Monday during unveil-
ing ceremonies for the grave-
stone for the 58 El Al passen-
gers killed when the plane was
shot down over Bulgaria two
years ago by Bulgarian fighters.
The Israeli Interior Minister,
Bar Yehuda, representing the
government, said it was "pain-
ful" that a government which
admitted responsibility for the
destruction of the plane had
still not paid compensation to
families of victims.
While compensation cannot
revive the dead, he said, it may
help those who depended on the
victims.
The gravestone is a marble
square inscribed with all names
of the victims. Part of the tail
of the airliner is part of the
memorial representing only part
of the plane found in Bulgaria
after the crash.
Hundreds of relatives, many
of whom made special trips to
-- Israel for the ceremony, took
part in rites conducted jointly
by Chief Rabbi Jacob Toledano
of Tel Aviv, an Anglican priest
and a Catholic Abbe. Relatives
jointly recited the Kaddish.
The Communist Bulgarian
regime meanwhile was accused
by Israel of reneging on the
promise to pay compensation for
the 58 El Al plane passengers.
A Foreign Ministry spokes-
man said that the latest Bul-
garian proposal suggested direct
contributions to next of kin of
the victims, with Bulgaria re-
fusing to accept negotiations
and without compensation for
the plane valued at more than
s1.000.000. The spokesman called
the proposal "quite unaccept-
able."

Wilson W. Wyatt, chairman
of the Rauch Memorial Com-

location on Belknap Campus
would recall the deep interest
Dr. Rauch had in education and
youth. Dr. Rauch had served
as a trustee of the university
for 13 years.
The planetarium, to be lo-

Natural Science Building, will
be air-conditioned. It will have
seating accomodations for 120

Construction is expected to
begin this Fall and to be com-

Rev. Elson 'Impressed'
By Israel Developments
JERUSALEM (JTA) — The
Rev. Edward Elson, minister of
the church President Eisen-
hower attends in Washington,
was received by Premier David
Ben-Gurion.
The Rev. Elson, a leading
member of the American
Friends of the Middle East,
which has been unfriendly to I
Israel, is spending five days in
Israel during a tour of the
Middle East.
In an interview with the
Jerusalem Post, Rev. Elson said
that the American Friends may
consider establishing a "field
office" in Israel. Contrasting
what he sees on this visit with
what he saw on his last visit
to Israel in 1952, Rev. Elson
called developments in Israel
"impressive."
