MEXICO CITY, (JTA) -
Nineteen Jews died and more
than 20 were seriously injured
in the earthquake here, it was
officially established. Among
those - who lost their lives were
the mother and sister of Alberto
Benrey, president of the Shep-
hardic community.
Many Jewish industrialists
and merchants suffered directly
and indirectly from the results
of the quake. Numerous fac-
tories and offices have been
destroyed. One building housing
nine Shephardic Jewish fam-
ilies collapsed killing all but
two of the inhabitants.

Mrs. Hazel Lawrence Shapiro.
wife of the Deputy Chief of
Detectives of the Detroit Police
Department. Albert Shapiro,
died Thursday' at the age of 54.
Mrs. Shapiro succumbed to can-
cer after being bedridden for
4i., years.
Mrs. Shapiro. who raised
irises as a hobby and cultivated
several new varieties, was a
member of the American and
Michigan Iris Societies. She was
active in tilt Women's Associa-
tion of the Detroit Symphony,
Orchestra and Zager Chapter
of Bnai Brith.
Surviving Mrs. Shapiro. in
addition to her husband al e
her mother. Mrs. Laura Law-
rence: two daughters, Diane and
Mrs. Edward J. Lawrence; a
sister. Mrs. Ben Saylor of Kings-

ayahu Aviad-Wolfsberg, Israeli
Minister to Switzerland and
Hapoel Hamizra•hi leader. (lied
in Berne last Friday of a heart
ailment shortly after he re-
turned from the World Zionist
Actions Committee meeting in
Jerusalem. A distinguished pedi-
atrician. he had written books
on Jewish history and philoso-
phy. He was 63.
