JERUSALEM (JTA) — Un-
authorized ingredients found in
bread sold here lately tend to
be solid but indigestible, ac-
cording to the courts, which
have been imposing heavy fines
on negligent bakers.
From the list of fines, it can
be seen that the punishment is
meant to fit the crime.
For a piece of iron in a loaf
of regular bread, a bakery was
fined 100 pounds; a piece of
glass in a white loaf cost an-
other bakery 75 pounds; and a
razor blade found in a roll cost
the same firm 75 pounds.

Father's Blessing at
His Son's Bar Mitzvah

By RABBI SAMUEL J. FOX

(Copyright, 1957, JTA, Inc.)

A father makes a special
blessing after his son has pro-
nounced the blessings over the
Torah at his Bar Mitzvah.
This blessin g, known as
"Boruch hepetorani" is men-
tioned in the Jewish Codes. It
expresses thanks to the Lord for
relieving the father of the pun-
ishment of the child. Two rea-
sons are advanced for this bless-
ing. One contends that up to the
age of Bar Mitzvah a father is
punished for the wrongs of his
son. Upon reaching the age of
13 a son is liable for his own
sins. The other reason is that up
to the age of 13 years and a day
(the Bar Mitzvah age), a son
is punished for the sins of his
father in some manner. After
the age of Bar Mitzvah a son
isn't punished for his father's
wrongs. According to the latter
theory the blessing also involves
the father's thanks for having
his son relieved of punishment
on his account.

Israel Goldstein, president of
the American Jewish Congress,
who is presently visiting Israel.

Groucho Marx to Portray
Dutch Buyer of Manhattan
Groucho Marx, currently be-
fore the cameras at Warner
Bros. Studios, portrays Dutch-
man Peter Minuit, history's
sharpest real estate man, who
purchased Manhattan Island
from the American Indians for
$24 in 1626. The scene is a part
of the motion picture "The
Story of Mankind," which is
being produced and directed by
Irwin Allen, Groucho's close
friend ever since the two worked
together on the screen comedy
"Double Dynamite."

ORT Opens School
in Tetuan, Morocco

A new ORT vocational school
opened in Tetuan, Morocco, ex-
tends the program of ORT to
seven cities of North Africa,
covering the chief centers of
Jewish population in the area.
Tetuan was the capital of the
former Spanish Zone of
Morocco. It contains some 6,000
Jews, out of 13,000 in the Zone.
The Jews of Tetuan are, in their
vast majority, extremely poor.
They live in mellahs (ghettos)
as do Jews elsewhere in Moroc-
co. Many are dependent on the
nedava — the communal dole.
There is little that can properly
be described as industry, except
for a match factory that em-
ploys numbers of Jewish girls
and a few other small enter-
prises.
Jews are predominantly arti-
sans and petty merchants. The
women work as domestics. Very
many are without trades of any
kind and suffer chronic unem-
ployment. Tuberculosis is com-
mon throughout the Zone. These
conditions are true not only for
Jews; they are part of the ex-
haustion and poverty of the
country.
At a New York dinner at
which more than $700,000 was
raised by ORT for the United
Jewish Appeal, Dr. William
Haber, ORT president, reviewed
the organization's work in train-
ing thousands of handicapped,
homeless, unskilled Jewish ref-
ugees for constructive careers
in industry in their new com-
munities. At the event, arranged
in honor of George J. Minzer
and Isaac Siegmeister, impartial
chairmen between labor and
management in a number of in-
dustries, Dr. Haber also stressed
the increasing need for rehab-
ilitation and training of the
world's dis-oriented refugees.

Levin's 'Compulsion' Slated for Stage, Screen

"Compulsion," Meyer Levin's
best-selling novel based on the
Leopold-Loeb murder case of
1924, will be brought to the
screen by Darryl F. Zanuck.
Fearful that the re-telling of
the shocking crime before the
world-wide audience of the
cinema might create a false im-
pression—if not anti-Semitism
—in the mind of the naive
viewer, Levin was asked to
give his own opinion on the
subj ect.
This is what Meyer Levin
has to say:
"The screen adaptation of
`Compulsion' is far away. I've
just completed the play, which
Jose Quintero and Ted Mann
will produce in the fall.
"The Jewish angle is as in-
the book. I do not emphasize

will also be in the film, I don't
