Israel's Scenic and Historic Galilee

A touch of the American West
has been added to the majestic
region of Israel's Galilee region.
For here, Israel's Sabras, or na-
tive-born, have adopted the pro-
fession of cowboy.
Wearing wide sombreros, tight
blue jeans and cowboy boots,
the Israelis swing their lassos
over a stampeding herd of cat-
tle in true American cowboy
fashion.
Possibly, the sight is a bit
incongruous, but nonetheless it
is in fascinating contrast to the
Biblical atmosphere and sites of
Israel's Galilee.
When touring the Galilee, the
tourist stops in the ancient Ro-
man town of Tiberias, now a
modern resort city overlooking
the beautiful Sea of Galilee.
One spends his time at the
luxurious hotels or the small
outdoor cafes, watches the fish-
ermen haul in their catch and
mend their nets as their fore-
fathers did in Biblical times
and sees the many-hued boats
going back and forth between
Tiberius and the settlement of
Ein Gev.
Only a 10 - minute drive
from Tiberias is a valley of
enchanting beauty where the

NY State Bias
Complaints Up 1/2

NEW YORK (JTA) — The
New York State Commission
Against Discrimination reported
it had received 50 per cent
more complaints of bias in the
first six months of this year
than in the same period of
1956.
Commission chairman Charles
Abrams said the complainants
charged that they were dis-
criminated against in employ-
ment, housing or other places.
of public accommodation be-
cause of their race, religion or
national origin.
Abrams said his agency re-
ceived 502 ,cornplaitts through
June of this-. year compared - to
332. coMplaints filed during the-
first six months of 1956. This
year's total - so far exceeds the
number of complaints filed in
the entire 12 months of any
previous year in the Commis-
sion's 12-year history,_ with,
the exceptiOn of 1956.
Abrams attributed the rise
in complaints to a greater
awareness among minority
groups of their rights under
the law rather than to an in-
crease in , bigotry. He said • that
the discrithination complained
of was found to exist in 14 per
cent of the cases investigated
this year which is considerably
lower than the 27 per cent
average over the last ten years.

shepherds and sheep are slow-
ly giving way to the tumult
of cowboys and cows.
In this valley of Gennesaret,
a cowboy school has been set up
by the U.S. Operation Mission
in Israel and the Israel Depart-
ment of Agriculture.
John Killough, a veteran
American cowboy from Wyo-
ming, is director of the cowboy
school. At present, a group of
30 Israeli members of agricul-
tural settlements are training to
become full-fledged cowboys.
Among the trainees is Car-
mela, a smiling shepherdess
who now wants to learn the
secrets of being a cowgirl.
The first trainees should know
their new profession within the
year, and according to Killough,
the Hills of Galilee and the
plains of the Negev should soon
teem with native Israeli cow-
boys and their herds.
This project, called "Opera-
tion Cowboy," was introduced
in order to raise Israel's stock
of beer cattle. Thus far, close
to $200,000 has been invested
in the school. •
And so, on your visit to the
Galilee region y_ou will feel at
home immediately upon arri-
val. You will see 20th century
Americana within sight of the
Mount of the Sermon, within
reach of the beautiful Sea of
Galilee and of Safed, a Medi-
eval town which gave birth
to the mystic Cabbala -move-
ment.

NOT TO BE OUTDONE by
her famous husband, Joey
Adams, who lent a big hand
with last week's column on
marital bliss from the masculine
viewpoint, wife Cindy Heller
Adams takes the part of the gals
in giving their side of the pic-
ture in likewise jocular vein ...
"Has-beens or husbands (same
thing) are a necessary evil.
Without them marriage would
be very dull. What happened to
the great lovers they were dur-
ing the courtship? After two
years of wedded bliss, they're
levers—they've got to be pried
out of their chairs to go to a
neighborhood movie! Can you
remember when your husband
was a five-letter man and was
considered an excellent athlete
instead of just , a fair scrabble
player today? Can you remem-
ber when they used to dress to
kill when they took you out
for an evening! And now their
clothes are murder! Think back
to the days when old lover-boy
carried you across the thresh-
hold, and today he considers
himself a gentleman if he hdlds
the door open for his wife while
she .carries in a load of gro-
ceries. The gay blade is a little
rusty now ! One husband com-
plained, 'I don't get along with
my wife. She understands me!'
When a man says his wife un-
derstan.ds him, he usually has
his own way. Every bride-
winner pictures himself as a
martyr who has given up a gay
life with the young chicks to
become hen-pecked--but don't
feel sorry for them because
they do OK in their noisy little
way. I knew a tatoo artist whose
wife left him because he had
designs on other women. And
there's the girl who quit her job
as governess because, she com-
plained, 'The children were too
backward and the father was
too forward.' Tommy Manville
marries in haste and repents at
leisure. He liked one wife so
much he held her over for an-
other week.' A husband, says
Cindy, would like to believe he
could do all the things his wife
suspects he does. Like hubby
Joey, wife Cindy can also rattle
off the chuckle-getters ... Like
the fellow who died and his
friends inquired- as to whether
he left his wife much. "Almost
every night," wailed the wife
• Cindy continues, "The habit-
ual thief was so thoughtful of
his wife. When he was arrested
and was riding in the patrol
wagon, he pleaded, 'Could we
stop off and tell the wife where
I am so she won't worry?"

Histadrut Seeks to Break Deadlock

TEL AVIV, (JTA)—An extra-
ordinary session of the plenary
executive of Histadrut, the Is-
rael Federation of Labor, has
been summoned by the Hista-
drut's executive bureau in an
effort to break the deadlock in
the strike against the ATA tex-
tile firm, Israel's largest textile
enterprise.

Lavon disclosed that Hista-
drut's treasury had already al-
lotted 220,000 pounds ($122,000)
to strike funds, matching a simi-
lar grant from the Haifa Labor
Council.
A sharp party struggle has
arisen around the ATA strike.
