E tian Col. Sadat's Book AttaCks
U. S. Policies in Relation to Israel
Friday, July 26. 1957
,
COL Anwar El Sadat, editor
of the Egyptian government
newspaper El Gumbetiriya, - who
has served - as Minister of State
in Gamal Abdel Nasser's cabi-
net and as secretary of the Pen-
Islam Congress, is the author
of - "Revolt on the Nile," pub-
lished by • John Day Co. - (210
Madison, N. Y.), The book has
a • foreword - bY. Nasser himself
who writes about a futUre full
of promise for his country. The
publishers state about the book,
on its cover, that it is "a shock-
ingly frank disclosure of the
Nasser revolution in Egypt, by
one of • its lieutenants."
The reader therefore knows
what to expect from • Sradat. If
the publishers had just said
that it was "a shocking book,"
it would have been sufficient.
It stands to reason that it is a
biased description of episodes
intended to glorify the EgyipT
tan dictator..
There is a fantastic story
about Sadat's dealings with two
Nazi agents, who allegedly
"changed their 40,000 pounds in
failse banknotes into .Egyptian
money through the agency of a
Jew. The Jew took 3,3% per -
. cent commiss•on." Sadat pro-
ceeds to ask "what did the Jew
know about the source of the
money., he -.had -changed?" He
relates
elates that the two men
were found "dead drunk with
two Jewesses" and were ar-
rested. Sadat writes that they
Were betrayed by the two Jew-
esses: "These ladies -of doubtful
virtue had been promised 200
pounds for their services. What
matter if they got it from the
young Nazis or from the British
Intelligence Service?"
This is the typical Streicher
method, being copied by the _
Egyptians., to create preju-
dice.
Sadat proceeds later an in
his book with an -attack on
Israel • and the Zionists. He
launches - an assault on U. S.
policy: "The imperialthst econ-
omy of the United States came
-:to- the assistance of European
:imperialism in Palestine, by in-
vesting an enormous capital
sum- in the country. American

ambition had. been 'roused by
the war, and the State Depart-
ment dreamed of forcing its
authority on the Islamic world,
from the Caucasus ; to the In-
dian Ocean. They set up
State of Israel in the hope of
gaining a .foothold in the Mid-
dle East, astride one of the
world's trade routes, where
they could keep an eye on the
Russian colossus."
This type of propaganda
has been heard echoing
through all discussions of the
Middle East' . problem during
the past few years. Sadat's
attack on this country's poli-;
cies continues: `.`The discov-
ery of the world's richest
petroleum deposits on • the
Arabian peninsula exerted an •
irresistible attraction for the
Americans. It might well be
asked whether this under-
skandable eagerness would not
have been better served had
they adopted a more - concili-
atory attitude to the adjacent
Arab states, instead of an-
tagonizing_ them by -support-
ing Israel. Apparently Anglo- •
Saxon logic is very differ-
ent from Arab logic."
- In this fashion, the'- author
of "Revolt on the. Nile., con-
tin:ues with his attack_ on the
West, on Jews and Zionists. He.
traces the Nasser story,
.soribing.the dictator's activities
underground, speaking well of
Neguib until he was removed
from office.. He . speaks -affec-
tiOnately of Neguib,. stating that
Nasser offered to decline the
presidency of Egypt 'in his fa-
vor--all in • the 'whiteWashing
scheme of • glorifying Nasser.
Not a word about Neguib being.
held under house arrest, as has
been admitted by Nasser him-
self recently in the Look Maga-
zine interview.
The eicpulsiOn of Farouk is
described in numerous details.
Neguib is reported by Sadat as
having "told us - that he felt
embarrassed at being pushed
into the forefront and assum-
ing •a leading role for which he
had not been prepared." Nas-
ser's offer to resign the presi-
! deny in -Naguib's favor "was
unanimously. rejected," • Sadat
writes. In Its totality, this story
is a subtle way of - glorifying
the present dictator. Many of
the facts that had since be-
come known belie the claims
advanced in this book. But the
story is revealing—even if it is
so shocking—in its attack ore•
Israel and on the United States
and our allies.
