Urgent Warning to Advertisers
Beware of Misrepresentations
The attention of The Jewish News has been called to the tactics of
certain local neighborhood advertising bulletins which are soliciting ads
purportedly for a Jewish New Year Greeting Edition.
Friday, July 19, 1957
These advertising periodicals -- some of them shopping guides
without any news value — are sending out solicitations with attached
copies of advertisements clipped from Jewish News holiday issues,
thereby giving the false impression that they are Jewish newspapers and
that these advertisements appeared in their columns previously.
The Jewish News wishes to call the attention of the community to the
fact that it is the only Jewish newspaper published in Michigan.
The Jewish News has no connection whatsoever with the soliciting
newspapers that are misrepresenting local merchants by approaching
them with copies of our ads. It stands to reason that we do not condone
such misleading solicitations.
Advertisers are warned not to be misled by the similarity of type, for-
mat and context in those ads which were extracted from The Jewish News
and are being used by other unauthorized newspapers.
Question Appeal of Hildy Decision to Higher Court;
Ellises Awarded Adoption of 6-Year-Old Child
Conflicting reports were
heard this week from news
sources that Mrs. Marjorie Mc-
Coy Doherty 'would appeal a
Florida court decision to award
custody - of her child Hildy to
a Jewish couple, Mr. and Mrs.
Melvin B. Ellis.
The Jewish Telegraphic
Agency indicated that Mrs.
Doherty would appeal the de-
cision and that her lawyers
are awaiting a transcript of
the proceedings before ready-
ing the appeal.
Ellis, Judge Prunty said the Mass., Catholic periodical, re-

persons to adopt the child and not yet determined whether
that the child's best interests the decision would be appealed.
were served by the adoption.
In her statement to Pilot,
Meanwhile, the Pilot, Boston, Mrs. Doherty said, "I am grate-
ful to Massachusetts justice for
upholding my rights to provide
for my baby in accordance
with conscience . . . With
prayers I hope many will
share, I entrust her to the lov-
ing protection of God and
leave the rest in the hands
of my attorneys."
Earlier, Circuit Court Judge
John Prunty officially approved
adoption of six-year-old Hildy
by the Ellises, who have cared
for her since she was 10-
months-old.
In ruling that the child shall
hereafter be known as Hildy

Israel to Sue Russia
for Disrupting Trade
JERUSALEM (JTA) — Two
Israeli attorneys are expected
to leave for Moscow shortly to
press Israeli claims for damages
caused by the unilateral dis-
ruption of a trade agreement - by
the Soviet state-owned Petro-
leum Export Company which
refused to make scheduled oil
shipments to Israel during the
Sinai campaign.
Israel had a trade agreement
with the USSR which ex-
changed citrus fruit for crude
oil, but during the Sinai oper-
ation an Israeli tanker at
Odessa was refused a scheduled
cargo on the grounds of instruc-
tions from the Soviet govern-
ment.
Under terms of the trade
pact, Israel has the right to ap-
peal to arbitration before a
court of the Moscow Chamber
of Commerce. It is understood
that the Israelis will demand
of the court that oil shipments
be resumed and that .compensa-
ton be paid for the damages
resulting from the unilateral
denunciation of the trade . pact.
