JERUSALEM, (JTA)
Gen. E. L. M. Burns, commander
of the United Nations Emer-
gency Force and head of the
UN Truce Supervision Organ-
ization, denied a report in a
Tel Aviv newspaper that he
was resigning because of con-
flict between him and UN Sec-
retary' General Dag Hammar-
skjold over the powers and
functions of UNEF in the Gaza
area.
"Gen. Burns states that this
report is false," a statement is-
sued at UNEF headquarters
a i d. "There
is a thorough

and the Secre-
ta ry _General

GEN. BURNS and there is
not, and has never been, any
disagreement. Gen. Burns has
no intention of resigning and
expects to continue in command
of UNEF for an indefinite
period.
(A similar denial was issued
also at the UN headquarters in
New York on behalf of Ham-
marskj old. )
An experimental load of 1,700
containers of milk from Israel
was brought to the Gaza Strip
by troops of the United Nations
Emergency Force in a UNEF
quartermaster test of supplying
UNEF regularly with fresh Is-
raeli milk.
UNEF previously had been
prevented by Egyptian author-
ities from any transactions with
Israel, although individual
LONDON—Sholem Asch, the
beloved Jewish novelist whose
latter years were involved in
controversies over novels deal-
ing with aspects of early Chris-
tianity and who found happi-
ness in Israel, died early Wed-
nesday at his
London home
of a brain hem-k1
morhage.
He was 77.
Death was
sudden. A vis-
itor who was
with him Tues-
day said he ap-
peared to have
been in good Sholem Asch
health with no signs. of an ill-
ness which hospitalized him in
Israel for several weeks last
spring.
The novelist and his wife had
been .guests last Friday of Is-
rael Ambassador Eliahu Elath
and Mrs. Elath. During that
visit the liovelist spoke of the
great happiness he had found
living in Israel and that he had
discoVered a peace of mind in
the Jewish State which he had
not known in his many years
of wandering through the
world.
UNEF officers have purchased
furniture in Israel for private
use.
The Israeli Radio announced
plans to begin foreign language
broadcasts for troops of the
United Nations Emergency
Force who have been cut off
from almost all contact with
Israel at the insistence of Presi-
dent Nasser of Egypt.
Current broadcasts in Eng-
lish, understandable to Indian
UNEF troops, and in Spanish-
Ladino, understandable to Latin
American soldiers, will be aug-
mented by broadcasts in Swed-
ish, Danish and Indonesian.
The five-language one-hour
daily broadcasts will reach most
of the UNEF troops.
Israeli sources said that the
UNEF soldiers were eager to
obtain information about Israel
and that Nasser knew whatever
they learned underscored their
poor opinion of Egypt.
As a result, Nasser persuaded
UN Secretary General Dag
Harnmarskjold to ban UNEF
visits to Israel. Scandinavian-
Indonesian broadcasts should
help UNEF soldiers get a "real
picture of Israel and world
news independent of Nasser's
propaganda machine," it was
stated here.

JERUSALEM, (JTA)—France
has agreed to increase her orig-
inal grant of $30,000,000 in credit
to Israel to $45,000,000 and 'san
more favorable terms, Finance
Minister Levi Eshkol reported
at the first Cabinet session since
his return from the United
States. En route home he
stopped - off in Paris.
The original credit grant re-
quired Israel to use $5,000,000
for consumer goods, $5,000,000
for semi-finished products and
the remainder for development
equipment.
The new credit may be used
entirely for development pur-
poses, including the purchase of
port equipment and facilities
for the overland transportation
of liquid cargo in bulk.
Official Israel circles ex-
pressed their gratitude at this
latest French move, noting that
at a time when the French eco-
nomy is pressed France has
agreed to . increase the scope of
her aid to the Jewish State.

Center Denied Roadway
to Proposed Temple
RIVER EDGE, N. J. (JTA)-
The Jewish Community Center
here appeared to have lost a
fight to gain a roadway to a
site on which it planned to
build a temple.
Bought over a year ago, the
site is "land - locked" by a
brook, private homes, a school
site and an acre of municipal
property. The center officials
hoped to get approval for a
20-foot wide -driveway through
the borough-owned plot, but
the request was denied.
David B. Kuehne, attorney
for the Borough Council, said
that the municipal property
would be used for a park. The
land, unused for four and a
half years, is situated in a
marshy area. Mayor S. Walter
Wanner has called it "marginal
property."
