United Hias Cheers
Kennedy's Proposal
NEW YORK (JTA)-United
Hias Service, world-wide Jew-
ish migration agency, wel-
comed an immigration bill pre-
sented by Sen. John F. Ken-
nedy, of Massachusetts, as a
"move to give substantial re-
lief to despairing refugees cur-
rently seeking new homes."
At the same time, the agency
expressed "regret" that the
current session of Congress
"apparently will not move to
revise our basic immigration
policy."
Solomon Dingol, United Hias
vice-president, said that the
Kennedy measure brings hope
to thousands of refugees, ex-
pellees and other homeless per-
sons because it provides for
the use of some of the unissued
quota. numbers.
Sen. Kennedy's proposal also
would utilize 18,000 unused
visas left from the Refugee Re-
lief Act, permit entry of or-
phans up to 14, write off the
mortgage on quota numbers
and contain provision for the
admission of not only Euro-
pean refugees but also some
froni the Middle East.
