Oct. 1, the World Jewish Con-

ed a full English translation of
the Law.
Stating that efforts are being
made to secure an extension of
the deadline, Dr. Nehemiah
Robinson, director of the Insti-
tute, reported that as of last
Dec. 31, 1,576,000 claims had
been filed.
Of that number, about 367,000
have been settled in full by
German compensation agencies.
Since the Federal Indemnifica-

1953, Dr. Robinson said, Bonn
has paid $387,000,000- to claim-

News from Around the World

JOHANNESBURG (JTA) -
Dr. Louis Rabinowitz, Chief
Rabbi of the Federation of
Synagogues, challenged the Na-
tionalist Government of South
Africa in its attempts to extend
its apartheid (segregation)
policy to religion,
In an article in a recent
issue of the Zionist Record, he
rejected the amendment to the
Native Laws Bill which would
bar Negroes from white
churches in this country. De
spite the fact that "we have no
native Jews in South Africa,"
Rabbi Rabinowitz declared that
the synagogues were "open to
everyone of any creed or color"
and that Negroes "would be ad-
mitted to services in exactly
the same way as Europeans."
The Chief Rabbi stressed that
""Judaism makes no distinction
between white and black" and
that Jewry included the black
Jews of Cochin, the dark-
skinned Yemenite Jews, the
Negro Jews of Harlem and the
Falashas of Ethiopia. He under-
lined the fact that there was no
color bar in Israel.

Perfects Heart Surgery

SAN FRANCISCO (JTA) -
Dr. Angelo May, a member of
the Mount Zion Hospital medi-
cal staff, was revealed re-
cently to be the designer of the
special curette used successfully
in two operations to scrape out
the inside of closed-up arteries
of patients with serious coro-
nary disease.
The sensational new tech-.
nique was first announced by
Dr. Charles P. Bailey, world-
famed heart surgeon, who used
the instrument and the tech-
nique developed experimentally
on animals by Dr. May in a
three-year Mt. Zion research
project.
The procedure affords a pos-
sible lead to coronary arterio-
sclerosis, a major health prob-
lem and the leading cause of
death in heart disease.

Norway Seeks Extension
of Bonn Indemnity

OSLO (JTA)-The Norwegian
government will raise again
with the West German govern-
ment the extension of German
indemnification legislation to na-
tionals of other countries who
had been persecuted by , the
Nazis on racial, religious or
political grounds, Foreign Min-
ister Halyard Lange disclosed.
The West German govern-
ment has rejected a proposal by
eight nations - including Nor-
way-that an intergovernmental
committee be set up to study
possibilities of remedying the
situation whereby these Nazi
victims are' excluded from Ger-
man compensation legislation.
The Bonn authorities suggested
that needy persons excluded
from the benefits of this legis-
lation be aided by charitable
measures in which the Germans
would participate.
Lange, when he reported this
to the Norwegian Parliament,
said that the German position
was "unacceptable."

Trial of Ex-Nazi Adjourned
VIENNA, (JTA)-The trial of
Serguisz Bobko, charged with
conducting the Nazi massacre of
thousands of Jews in Byelorus-
sian towns during the time he
was commander of a concentra-
tion camp at Koldyczew, ii
Nazi-occupied Poland, has been
adjourned.
