An allotment of eight-inch steel pipes, produced in Ramle,
Israel, at a factory established in 1952 with State Israel Bond
assistance, is being loaded aboard open flatcars for shipment
south where it will be used on the 144-mile-long Elath to
Beersheba pipeline, now nearing completion. Workers at the
pipe factory, which operates on a two-shift-a-day schedule,
turn out 450 sections of 36-foot-long pipe daily, thus keeping
pace with the men building the pipeline project in the dessert.
The manufacture of the large quantities of pipes of various
sizes for the present and projected pipelines presents no special
problem for Israel's steel-pipe plant at Ramle, where three
production lines are steadily engaged in making pipes ranging
in diameter from three inches to sixteen and larger. The fac-
tory's expansion plans, which will be fulfilled with the aid of
Israel Bond dollars, envisage the production of pipes that are
welded inside and out and lined with anti-corrosive materials,
thereby meeting the standards of the American Petroleum
Institute. _
