Move to Solve Arab Refugee Issue

(Direct JTA Teletype Wire

WASHINGTON — Secretary
Of State John Foster Dulles
Tuesday denied knowledge of
a reported American move to
solve the Arab refugee prob-
lem. He told a press conference
that he knew of no talks re-
portedly conducted by the
United States with friendly
governments on the feasibility
of a new international effort
to solve the problem.
The report on_ which Dulles
was queried emanated from
Washington and was attributed,
to "diplomatic circles." It said
that Ambassador Henry Cabot
Lodge, U.S. representative at

ernment with regard to the
Arab refugee problem con-
tinues to be that enunciated in
the past. He said he was not
aware , of any new develop-
ment.
' He termed the Arab refugee
issue "a great humanitarian
problem" that the United
States would like to see solved.
But he added that he regretted
very much that "Egyptian
propaganda" at, this juncture
makes a solution more .difficult.
This was in reference to Egyp-
tIn allegations that the United
States, in collusion with Israel
and Arab states friendly to the
United States, was plotting a
settlement zat the expense of
Arab refugees.
Dulles indicated, however,
that he did not preclude the
possibility of exploratory
moves because this would be

It authorizes also an addition-
al $300,000,000 of government-

Israel has benefitted from

B-G, Assures Committee Delegation,
Israel Speaks Only for Its Jews

(Direct JTA Teletype Wire
to The Jewish News)

JERUSALEM — While Israel
is open to all Jews who desire
or • need to live in Israel, it has
been emphasized on numerous
occasions that Israel represents
and speaks on behalf of its own
citizens and in no w. ay repre-
sents or speaks for Jews in oth-
er countries, Premier David
Ben-Gurion Tuesday told an
American Jewish Committee
delegation which has just com-
pleted a week-long tour of the
Jewish State.
Committee sources disclosed
that Ben-Gurion indicated to
them that upon the completion
of the delegation's mission a
statement to this effect would
be issued officially.
The delegation, headed by
AJC president Irving Engel and
executive vice president John
Slawson, met twice with Ben-
Gurion and with a number of
Jewish and Arab cultural lead-
ers.
The Ben-Gurion statement
was elicited in connection with
one of three major objectives
of the delegation's clarification
of the relationship of Ameri-
can Jews to Israel.
Another point raised by the
AJC unit was the status of the
Arab minority in Israel and the
extent of Israel's readiness to

participate in a solution of the
Arab refugee problem.
The impression gained here is
that the delegation understood
that moving toward a solution
is the primary responsibility of
the Arab countries.
A third point of discussion
was the status of Reform Juda-
ism in Israel. The Pi,emier re-
iterated that if Jews inside Is-
rael want to establish Reform
congregations they will not be
hindered.
