A 17 - year - old high school
senior from Utica, Mich., left
Wednesday by plane for 12
weeks in Europe, 10 of which
will be spent as part of a stu-
dent exchange program.
The youth is Michael Bort-
man, son of Dr. and Mrs. Irwin
Bortman, of 45094 Vanker, Uti-
ca. Michael will stay in Han-
over, Germany, with the fam-
ily of a doctor who is now de-
ceased.
In a letter to Michael, the
doctor's wife told how delighted
she was to have a Jewish boy
staying with her, and explained
that during the Hitler regime
her husband was jailed on sev-
eral occasions for anti - Nazi
activity.

Following his stay with the
German family, Michael will be
joined by an instructor at Utica
High for a two-week Youth
Hostel bicycle tour of Europe.
He will return home in Sep-
tember, in time to enter classes
for the fall semester. Michael's
older brother, David, 19, is a
sophomore at the University of
Michigan.
