Southerners Oppose Union Stand
on Desegregation but Won't Bolt

25,000 New Yorkers
Attend Concert for

The overwhelming majority
of white union members in the
South disagree with labor's of-
ficial position on desegregation
in the public schools, it is indi-
cated in a report by Emanuel
Muravchik, national field direc-
tor of the Jewish Labor Corn-
mittee.
The report, measuring the im-
pact of current racial develop-
ments on unions in the South,
resulted from a survey made for
the AFL-CIO with a grant from
the Fund for the Republic.
Two-thirds of all the locals
surveyed replied "most" to the
question: "Indicate how many
of the white members hold these
attitudes: Most ...., Many ....,
Few .... are strongly opposed
to school integration."
Similarly, another question
was answered by one-third of
the locals with the answer
"many" in regard to a question
of support for the White Citi-
zens Councils.
Despite the predominantly
pro-segregationist attitude s,
two-thirds of the locals gave
the answer "few" when asked
if they had a strong feeling
against the labor movement for
its opposition to segregation.
It is a fact, the survey fur-
ther indicates, that not a single
Southern local has disaffiliated
from the AFL-CIO or one of its

NEW YORK (JTA) — More
than 25,000 persons filled Eb-
bets Field to hear the ninth
annual America-Israel Cultural
Foundation "Music Under the
Stars" concert and to contribute
an estimated $100,000 for the
organization's program in Israel.
Cultural activities are as vital
as economic development in the
new and isolated settlements in
Israel, Dr. Arthur J. Lelyveld,
executive vice-president of the
AICF, told the audience, adding
that Israel "has more creative
artists and more lovers of the
arts per acre than any compar-
able area any place in the I
world."
In reporting on new building
projects, Dr. Lelyveld said that
on Oct. 2 the first building in
a $3,500,0(}0 four-unit Tel Aviv
Cultural Center will be dedi-
cated. The first building is the
Frederic R. Mann Auditorium,
named for the AICF board
chairman, a Philadelphian. The
building will be the permanent
home of the Israel Philharmonic
Orchestra.

"Every wise woman buildeth

Right on the

Joey Adams, whose antics and
jokes have helped many causes
in recent years,_ found _an ex-
cellent partner in his wife
Cindy in the retelling of many
of his funny stories which keep
his audience in stitches.
His latest book, "Cindy and I,
the Real Life Adventures of
Mr. and Mrs. Joey Adams," is a
travelogue. It is also the auto-
biography of two entertainers.
Published by Crown, Joey's
new book is climbing on the
seller list because the public
wants a laugh. They'll find it
in "Cindy and I."
Those who are interested in
Israel will get a thrill from his
description of his experiences
there. He calls the chapter
"Laughter Over Israel."
"Every place you go," he re-
ports, "a new project of some
kind is going up. As one sabra
(a native-born Israeli) put it,
`The only worry we have is pe-
destrians who have to get out of
the way of new buildings.' As
soon as a blade of grass springs
up, they erect a building around
it. It's dangerous to be seen
with a hammer or saw. They
can build a factory around you.
"As we stepped from our
plane, we were greeted by smil-
ing faces and 'Shalom!' Shalom
means `Hello,' Goodbye,"Glad
to see you,"See you soon' and
`Peace.' Tommy Manville and
Artie Shaw, who, between them,
were married about 17 times,
could live here a lifetime with-
out learning any other word."
Joey can be equally as funny
about Niagara Falls, Germany,
Miami, Texas, and other places
—and Cindy sure joins him in
poking fun.
That's why "Cindy and I" is
gaining ground as a best seller.

In 1956, there were 2,368,000
Americans injured in traffic
accidents.

international unions simply be-
cause of the union position on
the Supreme Court decision.
The survey showed that des-
pite the pattern of segregation
which prevails in both Southern
industry and other Southern or-
ganizaions, two-thirds of the
union locals in the South are
bi-racial.
One-quarter of these have at
least one Negro officer, and one-
half have at least one Negro
shop steward.
The study covered 110 lo-
cals of various internationals
in Alabama, Florida, Georgia,
Louisiana, Mississippi, North
Carolina, South Carolina, Ten-
nessee and Texas. These locals
were chosen as most represen-
tative of unionization in their
areas.
The survey warned that the
race issue could seriously dis-
rupt many Southern union lo-
cals, although so far only 50
locals have reported this as a
major problem.
Muravchik concluded that the
information while turning up
many evidences of potential dis-
affection, also makes clear that
there are many influences and
loyalties at work in the South
which can bring about an ac-
ceptance by the white majority
of the necessity for revising the
mores of their community to
meet the standards of a demo-
cratic society.
Muravchik recommended a
comprehensive program for
assisting local union leaders in
the South in coping with cur-
rent racial problems.
