Diane Sklar Gail Burkow
Two high school journalists
will attend summer sessions at
the University of Michigan and
Michigan State University on
scholarships granted by The
Jewish News.
The students, both girls, are
Diane Sklar and Gail Burkow,
who are regular contributors to
the Tales Out of School column,
a weekly feature of the news-
paper.
Diane will attend the 10th
annual special course in high
school journalism given at MSU.
It consists of two weeks of in-
tense study with experienced
instructors.
Classes will convene June 24
to July 5, and will include news
w r i t i n g, yearbook planning,
editing, page make-up, advertis-
ing, feature writing and photo-
graphy.
In addition, there are planned
extra-curricular activities, such
as concerts, lectures, recreation-
al programs, special tours, work-
shops, seminars and luncheons.
The U. of M. workshop that
Gail will attend is also designed
for staff members of high school
papers, yearbooks and mag-
azines. It will be conducted from
July 8 to 19, in the department
of journalism building at Mason
Hall.
The workshop is designed to
give students practice in meet-
ing the problems of producing
publications. The major project
will be the completion of an en-
tire edition of a newspaper.
Among the special events
planned are tours of newspap-
ers and other publications, social
activities, concerts, lectures, a
picnic, dance and recreational
programs.
Diane, who writes the Cen-
tral High School column, will
graduate this month from that
school. The daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Sol Sklar, of 4212 Leslie,

Chajes' Plan 12th
European Tour

Julius Chajes, Detroit com-
poser-pianist and conductor and
his wife, Marguerite Kozenn,
will depart, Tuesday, for their
12th European concert tour.
On June 21 they will record
three different programs for
Radiodifusion Francaise in Paris
for broadcasts to be heard
during the next season. On June
25 Chajes will play his Piano
Concerto with the orchestra
Suisse Romande in Geneva,
Switzerland. He will repeat it
over Radio Beromuenster in
Zurich, July 1. On July 2 they
will be in -Munich, guests of
Germany's outstanding com-
poser Karl Amadeus Hartmann.
Chajes and his wife are in-
vited to appear in three con-
certs over Radio Austria in
Vienna, during the first week
in July. •
Mine. Kozenn will sing arias
and songs by the Italian-Amer-
ican composer, Mario Castel-
nuovo Tedesco; the Greek com-
poser, Manolis Kalomiris, di-
rector of the Roy-al Conserva-
tory in Athens and compositions
by her husband.
The _ tour will conclude in
London, where Chajes will play
his Piano Concerto with the
BBC orchestra.

Irving Rattner, president of

of the newly-elected board of
directors last week. Plans were
made for the coming year's
activities.

Diane is a recent winner of a
Detroit Police Department youth
award, presented to one boy and
one girl in each Detroit high
school.
Gail's parents are Mr. and
Mrs. Irving Burkow, of 18954
Pennington. She is a junior at
Mumford High School, and has
alternated in writing the Mum-
ford column with Nancy Falk
for the past two years. She will
continue writing the column in
the fall.

Stevensville -Opens
for 34th Season

Harry Dinnerstein, host at
Stevensville Lake Hotel, Swan
Lake, N.Y., announces that
many additions and improve-
ments will greet vacationers at
the 34th anniversary season of
the famous resort.

ville's program of activities.

AJ Committee to Send
Delegation to Israel

A delegation of leaders of the
American Jewish Committee,
headed by Irving M. Engel, AJC
president, left on a 15,000 mile
fact-finding, survey and con-
sultative mission in Europe,
North Africa and Israel.
The delegation will confer
with heads of governments,
foreign ministers, Roman Catho-
lice officials and U. S. Am-
bassadors in Paris, Rome, the
Vatican, Casablanca, Tunis, Tel
Aviv and Jerusalem.
. American Jewish Committee
leaders were invited to visit
Israel by Prime Minister- David
Ben-Gurion. The last Commit-
tee mission to Israel was in
1949, less than a year after the
state was established. A Com-
mittee delegation surveyed con-
ditions in North Africa in 19454.
