My lot fell with those who
were forced to embark Decem-
ber 31, 1914, on the Italian S.S.
Bulgaria.
In an atmosphere of want,
homelessness and dread, a
secret meeting took place
March 2, 1915, in a somber
casemate of the Mafrujah bar-
racks. Among those present
were Rabbi R. della Pergola,'
Joseph Trumpeldor, Vladimir
Jabotinsky, Alargulies, Glus-
kin and myself as representa-
tives of the police force.
Jabotinsky's fiery appeal for
the formation of a Jewish Le-
gion to fight in Palestine was
enthusiastically received. Jabo-
tinsky, Trumpeldor and I signed
up for that legion immediately.
Five-hundred more enlisted in
a few trays in the barracks of
Gabari, Mafrujah, Cinema and
Governora. On March 19, Lt.
Col. I. H. Patterson was put
in command of the volunteers.
On April 17, they 1 e f t on
board the two ships—Hymettus
and Anglo-Egyptian—not f o r
Palestine, as promised, but for
Gallipoli. There they became a
part of the 29th Division. In
September 300 more Jewish
volunteers arrived from Egypt.
The first Jewish Legion—The
Zion Mule Corps—was assigned
to transport duty on the open
battlefields, continuously ex-
posed to the enemies' fire with
no means of defense. Here is
what the Commander-in-Chief
wrote of them: "The officers
and rank and file have shown
great courage in taking water
supplies and ammunition up to
the fighting line under fire."
Capt. Trumpeldor was their
fearless leader.
December 8, 1915, the evacua-
tion of Allied forces of Galli-
poli began, and by Jan. 8, 1916
it was complete. The first Jew-
ish Legion that played an im-
portant role in the gigantic
Allied attempt to break through
the mightiest fortifications on
earth—was disbanded, but the
saga of its achievements con-
tinued to burn bright in the
hearts of Jewish youth the
world over.
Later, Lt. Col. Patterson, then
in command of the Dublin Fu-
siliers at Gurragh, was called
to London by the War Office to
take charge of another Jewish
Legion in the process of forma-
tion. In spite of the opposition
of many leading Jews, the for-
mation of a Jewish Legion was
officially announced in the Lon-
don Gazette of Aug. 23, 1917.
This is the birthday of the Sec-
ond Jewish Legion.
Several days later a Jewish
delegation o f assimilationists
succeeded in obtaining from the
War Office an assurance that
the Jewish armed forces would
not be given any Jewish in-
signia or name, and that they
would be known as the Royal
Fusiliers, and by the number
of their Battalions.
The first Jewish unit, known
as the 38th Battalion, with an
initial strength of 900, left for
Palestine, Feb. 5, 1918, under
Lt. Col. Pattersons' command.
The next one, the 39th, under
Lt. Col. Lazar Margolin, reach-
ed Egypt April 30 with 600
men and the last, the 40th, un-
der the command of Lt. Col. F.
D. Samuels, with 1,100 volun-
teers, followed in August.
These Battalions were soon
to swell up with thousands of
Jewish volunteers who enlisted
in the Jewish Legion in the
United States and Canada.
The Legion idea even reached
Russia then under the Keren-
sky regime. Though hunted and
destroyed wherever found by the
Bolsheviks, as many as 5,000
reached Vladivostok and Khar-
bin on their way to England and
thence to Palestine. Their lead-
ers, Pinchas RuthenLerg and
Capt. Trumpeldor, were both
caught and imprisoned.
The Jewish Battalions had
an opportunity to be cast into
the final, decisive and most
ferocious combats on the
Palestine front. The ancient
capital Amman w a s con-
quered March 27.
On Sept. 19, the mighty at-
tack began. In three days the
Turkish spine was broken, 80,000
prisoners and loads of ammuni-
tion were taken. Ten days later
10,000 Turks surrendered at
Gaza. The whole of Palestine
was wrested away. On Oct. 31
Turkey surrendered.
With the cessation of formal
hostilities, the Jewish Legions
were left to patrol Palestine and
Syria seething with unrest.
