'Our People in Olden
Times—From Soul •
to Bar Kochba' •
"Our People in Olden Days-
FroM Saul to Bar Kochba," by
Ben Israel, illustrated by Her-
bert Krickman, is just the type
of book that will appeal to chil-
dren,—and will make it easier
for parents to pass on the early
Jewish historical facts to the
youngsters to whom they may
wish to read the stories.
Issued -by Kinderbuch Pub-
lishers (P.O.B. 3&8, Madison
Sq. Station, 'N.Y. 10). this book
is attractive,a the text is, for
ra-
young readers and the illust
tions are catchy. •
Kruckman is known for his
cartoons in World Over, the
popular •Jewish children's
magazine. Ben Israel has
Written many commendable
tales for youngsters.
This fine • books tells the
stories of Saul ,and David, de-
scribes the breakup, of the
united Hebrew kingdom and
proceeds to tell of the works
of the Prophets. Before relating
the story of the Prophet Amos,
this book tells of the rise of the
walled city of Samaria. _
Amos, Isaiah and Micah are
introduced to the reader, and
in-between each historical epi=
sode the author 'talks it over"
with his readers in a special
paragraph to make history move
understandable.
The Return to Palestine, the
works of Ezra and Nehemiah
and the conquest of Judea: by
the Greeks form another s&-
tion.
Then comes the Maccabean
era, the revolt at Modin, the
regaining- -of Jewish indepen-
dence. It is followed by life
Under the Romans, the story of
Jesus, the subsequent war for
independence. and the Bar
Kochba rebellion.
This is perhaps the first
time that a Jewish story
book includes a narrative
abOut Jesus. It is done with
tact, and it renders the serv-
ice of presenting the facts
about the rise of Christianity
from • the 'Jewish point of
view. -
A concluding chapter, "The
Glorious History of the Jews,"
encourages the children to read
the background of their people
as being "a wonderful" history
to read and tell about.
The book has the merit of
containing a glassarY. — with
Hebrew words. It contains a
list of "friends of Jewish edu-
cation" who made its publishing,
possible, and refers to "friends
from Detroit" as having partici-
pated in its sponsorship.
