Bond Capital Speeds
Elath Development

PARIS (JTA) — Monuments
to victims. of Nazi persecution
in France and. Jews murdered
by the Nazis at the Mauth•usen
concentration carry in Austria
were unveiled in separate serv-
ices this week.
The French ceremonies took
place at Pithiviers, near Or-
leans, where 14, 04p Jews were
later deported to death camps.
Most of the 160,000 persons who
perished at the Mauth ausen
carry were Jews.

State of Israel Bond in-
vestment capital is making
possible the development of
the port of Elath on the Gulf
of Aqaba, which Israel ex-
pects to use as a gateway to
Africa and Asia. Two riggers
are shown,above atop an Is-
raeli fishing vessel docked. at
one of Elath's completed
piers. A series of piers, break-
waters, warehouses, storage
tanks and other facilities to
accommodate freighters up to
10,000 tons of loading capa-
city and large oil tankers is
now being developed.

'Monkey on My Back,'
Barney Ross' Story

By HERBERT G. LUFT

(Copyright, 1957, JTA, Inc.)

. HOLLYWOOD — Edwar d
Small, a man who has produced
literally hundreds of successful
motion pictures, now presents
"Monkey on My Back," the life
story of Barney Ross. The new
movie not only caused a stir
with the Code administration,
the industry's voluntary censor,
but has also been blasted by
Barney himself who, currently
writing his autobiography, feels
that his career appears on the.
screen in an objectionable light.
"Monkey on My Back" is the
most excitingly filmed fighter
yarn since Stanley Kramer's
"Champion" of 10 years ago.
Truth or fiction, the Barney
Ross opus packs a mighty wal-
lop, telling us of the career of
a prize fighter who became a
bum, making a spectacular
comeback as war hero in the
U. S. Marine Corps of World
War II, to drop into oblivion as
a dope addict until he cured
himself by sheer will power.
The story covers a period of
12 years, from the successful
welterweight world champion
fight of 1934 to the four lonely
months Barney Ross spent in
voluntary confinement at the
U. S. Service Hospital in Lex-
ington, Ky., in 1946. The cause
of Barney's morphine habit has
been dramatized in a battle se-
quence laid on Guadalcanal
which, recreated realistiCally on
a Hollywood sound stage, shows
us the killing of 22 enemy sol-
diers by one man. The winner
of the Silver Star returns home
infected with malaria, leg
wounds and his maddening de-
sire for narcotics.
"Monkey on My Back," per-
haps involuntarily, becomes a
powerful indictment of war it-
self. Cameron Mitchell, as Bar-
ney Ross, elicits sympathy from_
the audience from the very mo--
ment he appears in the boxing
ring to his leaving the hospital
as the finish. Ben . Hersh, for
more than a decade Small's
closest associate, serves as pro-
duction supervisor.
