Name Rabbi Adler
to Head Union's
Review Board

Rabbi Morris Adler, spiritual
leader of Cong. Shaar"y Zedek,
has been appointed, chairman of
the Public -Review Board, which
was established by the United
Auto Workers at its convention
last April, in Atlantic City.
The board seeks to insure "a
continuation of high moral and
ethical standards in the admin-
istrative and operative stan-
dards in the practices of the In-
ternational Union and its subor-
dinate bodies."
The board, although estab-
lished by the UAW, will func-
tion as an independent body of
impartial individuals who will
constitute the highest court of
appeals in such cases as Union
members or Union bodies bring
before them.
Full autonomy has been
granted the board in setting up
its own procedures of adminis-
tration and operation. An office
will soon be opened in Detroit.
Present with Rabbi Adler at
the initial meeting of the board
were Bishop G. Bromley Ox-
nam, Msgr. George C. Higgins,
Prof. Erwin Witte, soon to join
Michigan S t a t e University,
Judge Wade H. McCree. Dr.
C. Kerr, chancellor of the Uni-
versity of California, was un-
able_ to attend.
A seventh board member,
probably a Canadian citizen, is
now under consideration.

PHINEAS J. BIRON

The Future Jew
Prof. Oscar Handlin of Har-
vard and Jacob R. Marcus of
the Hebrew Union College have
gone out on a. limb, predicting
what the American Jew will be
like when the twenty-first cen-
tury rolls along . .. And some
of their predictions are, if not
logical, in any case, interesting.
.. . Prof. Marcus, for instance,
has this to say about assimila-
tion . . "By its very nature,
assimilation also becomes a
means of survival, as when it
permits the individual to be-
come so like his neighbor that
he is no longer different" . . .
Because of this, concludes Prof.
Marcus, a Jewish community
will be free to exist because of
its similarity to others. . .
Quite candidly, to us, this does
not make sense . . . Are not the
Jewish communities in the U.S.
free to exist now? . . Is as-
similation forced upon us by
the threat of - anti-Semitism?
This poor layman, who does not
know much about sociology, be-
lieves that only the preserva-
tion of our own distinct Jewish
culture will prolong the free
existence of the Jewish com-
munity. . . If the Jew is to
be in every respect like his non
Jewish neighbor, he will have
ceased to exist, it seems to us.
Dr. Handlin also is convinced
that assimilation is moving for-
ward at a fast pace ... He sees

little chance of Jewish institu-
tions resisting the trend to a
homogeneous culture. . . . Jews
and Gentiles, he says, may be-
come so much alike that they
will be no More set apart than,
say, the Methodists from the
Baptists . . . In other words,
Prof. Handlin confirms the fu-
ture Jew in America will not
be much of a Jew . .. But he
does not regard this eventuality
as a grave menace . . . He con-
cludes that the hope for retain-
ing Jewish characteristics of in-
dividuality and dissent are not
through stress upon the whole-
ness and homogeneity of the
community but upon its free-
dom .•. All of which adds up
to this: Handlin's Jew of the
future will not be much of a
Jew but he will be a free
American . . . We a 1 w a ys
thought that a Jew could be
both, a free American and a
good Jew.
Odds and Ends:
Flash . . . We have been ad-
vised from a reliable source
that M. Gilbart, the French
Ambassador to Israel, is not a
Jew (as we said a few columns
ago) although he speaks a very
literary Hebrew . . Inciden-

tally, M. Gilbert may be the
guest speaker at the 1957 Weiz-
mann Dinner in New York . .
The Journal-Day, New York's
Yiddish daily, will introduce an
English section on Sundays be-
ginning with the coming Jewish
New Year . . . B. Z. Goldberg
will be its editor . . . The 10
foremost Jewish opera singers
of the v,rorld will give concerts
in Israel during the 10th anni-
versary year 1958-59 . . . There
is talk about a new Zionist pub-
lication to be issued by the new
Zionist group which came into
being recently . . Those in the
know insist -that President Ben-
Zvi of Israel will come to the
United States on an official
state visit during the spring of
1958 . . . Moishe Sharret, Is-
rael's former Foreign Secretary,
is writing his memoirs in which
he will tell all . . . Which re-
minds us that Ambassador
Eban's book "Voice of Israel"
is selling so fast that a second
and third edition are on the
press . . . Leonard Bernstein
will be the official conductor
at the opening gala concert of
the 10th anniversary celebra-
tion- of the Jewish State in
Israel.
