Conservatives Accused by Orthodox with Plan to Alter Marriage Ritual NEW YORK (JTA) — The Union of Orthodox Rabbis of the United States and Canada this week charged the Rabbini- cal Assembly of America, the association of Conservative rab- bis, with plans "to change the Jewish marriage ritual." A resolution unanimously ap- proved by 400 delegates at a one-clay conference of the Or- thodox rabbis asserted that "Conservative rabbis do not have the knowledge or author- ity to issue decisions on matters of Jewish Law." Rabbi Meyer Cohen, execu- tive director of the UOR, said the resolution referred to a pro- 1 posal approved at a recent con- ference of the Rabbi Assembly. The proposal dealt with the problem of the "agunah," a term for Jewish women who under Jewish Law cannot ob- tain a religious divorce for sev- eral reasons., Rabbi Aaron H. Blumenthal of Mount Vernon, N. Y., presi- dent of the Rabbinical As- sembly, said that the Assembly had only authorized a commit- tee to restudy the problem.
