Conservatives Accused
by Orthodox with Plan
to Alter Marriage Ritual

NEW YORK (JTA) — The
Union of Orthodox Rabbis of
the United States and Canada
this week charged the Rabbini-
cal Assembly of America, the
association of Conservative rab-
bis, with plans "to change the
Jewish marriage ritual."
A resolution unanimously ap-
proved by 400 delegates at a
one-clay conference of the Or-
thodox rabbis asserted that
"Conservative rabbis do not
have the knowledge or author-
ity to issue decisions on matters
of Jewish Law."
Rabbi Meyer Cohen, execu-
tive director of the UOR, said
the resolution referred to a pro- 1
posal approved at a recent con-
ference of the Rabbi Assembly.
The proposal dealt with the
problem of the "agunah," a
term for Jewish women who
under Jewish Law cannot ob-
tain a religious divorce for sev-
eral reasons.,
Rabbi Aaron H. Blumenthal
of Mount Vernon, N. Y., presi-
dent of the Rabbinical As-
sembly, said that the Assembly
had only authorized a commit-
tee to restudy the problem.

joy and gladness" (Is. 23:13),
"she is more precious than
rubies" (Prov. 3:15), rejoice, o
young man in thy youth"
(Eccles. 11:9), "thou art the
man" (II Sam. 12:7), etc.
Stuart Bloom was editor-in-
chief of the 1957 Annual. It is
dedicated to Dr. Norman
Drachler, the Beth El school's

nual contains a tribute to the
