Dr. Sommerstein Dead MIDDLETOWN, N. 1, (JTA) —Dr. Emil- Sommerstein, long- time leader of Polish Jewry, member of the first postwar Polish Government and an ac- tive Zionist, died here at 74. Dr. Sommerstein was presi- dent of a club composed of the Jewish deputies in the pre- war Polish Parliament, defend- ing Jewish interests in Poland. During the war he was im- prisoned by the SoN'ii.et authori- ties, but released afterwards and became a member of the first post-war Polish Cabinet, when a number of non-Com- munists served together with Socialists and Communists. During this period, Dr. Som-: merstein arranged for the re- patriation to Poland of some 140,000 Jews who had fled to the USSR to escape the Nazis. Most of • them went on to Is- rael, with Dr. Sommerstein's assistance. He came to the U.S. in 1946. Horodetzki Dies at 86 TEL AVIV, (JTA) — Shmuel Abba Horodetzki, noted author and leading scholar on the his- tory of the Hassidic movement, died here at 86. He was the author of the "History of Has- sidism" and some 500 articles on the subject in five lan- guages.
