Israeli-French Relations
It is obvious to the inter-
national political scene that
France, more than any other
Western Big power, has recog-
nized Israel as the key nation
in the Middle Fast . It must
be acknowledged that the archi-
tect of this close relationship
is none other than Jean - Pierre
Gilbert, the French Ambassador
to Israel . . . Mon_sieur Gilbert,
who incidentally is a Jew, has
kept • close contact with the
leaders and the population of
Israel . . . He studied the psy-
chology of Arab-JeWish rela-
tions, and more than anything
else he observed closely Presi-
dent Nasser's policy . . . was
M. Gilbert, who as Premier
Monet's outpost. in the Middle
East interpreted Nasser's anti-
West•attitude and thus was in-
directly responsible for France's
realistic policy . . .
The Banner Year
The Israel government has of-„
ficially announced that April,
1968 to April, 19'59 will be the
10th anniversary year of the
Jewish State . . . An ambitious
program of celebration is being
worked out . . . The Israel gov-
ernment believes that the anni-

new 'record for tourist trade to

Weisgal
may remember, produced some
years ago "The Romance of a
People" and "The Eternal
Road," two -magnificent spec-
tacles, which were acclaimed as
the best, in their genre . . .
was Weisgal who interested the
late Max- Reinhardt, Kurt Well
and Frantz Werfel in lending
their creative gifts to a drama-
tization of the Jewish tragedy

gal is the executive head of the

at Rehovoth, one of the most
significant institutions of higher

Sholem Aleichem Yahrzeit
Last week the Jewish world
celebrated the 42nd Yahrzeit, of

were no mass functions, but

TEL AVIV, (JTA)—The
Eisenhower Doctrine will have
little material effect on. the
United States aid program to
Israel, John Haggerty, the new
chief of the U. S. aid mission
here, revealed.
However, he indicated he
was "certain" the U. S. would

would be more emphasis on
long-term loans.
The American aid program,
disrupted by the Sinai cam-

Haggerty told newsmen. He
reported that about 60 per cent

safety measure during the
Sinai battle, is back at work.
This summer, he disclosed, a
number of experts obtained
under a State Department con-
tract with the University of
the State of New. York, will
