Fifth Annual Training Institute
on 70th Birthday

On his 70th birthday, which
he observed on May 15, Henry
C. Keywell, well known Detroit
business man and communal
worker, said his financial suc-
cesses have not dimmed his
early Struggles. "I recollect," he
said, "my early struggling days
and am mindful of the Al-
naighty's.bounties."

Mrs. Keywell have contributed
greatly for five decades to the
growth of the City of Detroit.

wells on behalf of all worthy
causes, local and national.
Born in Nowogrodek, a prov-
ince of Minsk, Russia, in 18&7,
Keywell came to New York in
1906 and was engaged in sev-
eral businesses there. He then
went to Memphis, Tenn., and
later to Buffalo, N. Y. He set-
tled in Detroit in 1908 and,
after Marrying Rose Beneson in
1810, entered the building and
real estate business.
He was president of Con-
gregation Bnai David for 13
years, and • the structure on
Elmhurst and 14th was built
during his presidency. Key-
well has been active in be-
half of, the Allied Jewish
Campaigns, United • Founda-
tion, American Red Cross,
American Cancer Society and
has aided veterans' organiza-
tions. In addition to support-
ing many local and national
causes, he is especially active
in behalf of Young Israel of
Detroit, Beth Yehudah - and
Chachmey Lublin Yeshivot.
Keywell labored on behalf of
the Young Israel Youth Center
on Dexter and Fullerton, and
guaranteed payment • of all
building contracts in 1048. A
plaque in his honor stands
erected in the lobby of the
Young Israel Youth Center.
During the 1931 depression,
he assisted in establishing soup
kitchens. He is director of the
Hebrew Benevolent Society. He
is a member of the Masonic
Order, Knights of Pythias and
Oddfellows.
During World War II, Key-
well and the late Isadore Kowal,
ca-owners of the Barluni
offered all their hotel facilities
to servicemen for observance of
all holidays.
More than 184 institutions re-
ceived his support last year. He
helped clear the mortgage of
Shaarey Shomayim Synagogue
on Muirland in. 1835.
In 1932 he was a candidate
for Congress on the Republican
ticket.
Keywell thanked his children,
his family and his close friends
for remembering him on his
70th birthday, and stated that
he treasures the close associa-
tion that he enjoys with his
children and the reverence in

The fifth annual Leadership
Training Institute sponsored by
the League of Jewish Women's
Organizations is scheduled for
June 3, in the Jewish War Vet-
erans Memorial Home, 4095 W.
Davison.
The program is open to presi-
dents, officers and board mem-
bers of affiliated organizations,
according to Mrs. Louis Kaz-
dan, League president.

will be discussed in the third
groups, with Mrs. Carl, Schiller,
chairman, and Mrs. Philip
Bernstein, speaker.
From 2:30 to 3 p.m., there
will be an assembly in the Sil-
verman room, with reports by
recorders of each session and
general discussion.
There are about 135 or-
ganizations affiliated with the
League.

At a recent meeting of the
Detroit Mr. and Mrs. Group,
City of Hope, Joe Mossok was
elected organization president,
Mrs. Sam Lipson, vice-presi-
dent; Iry Weintraub, secretary;
and Mrs..Sarah Fishkind, treas-
urer.
The group's next meeting will
be held at the home of Dr. and
Mrs. Hy Lewis, 24271 Black-
stone, Oak Park.
