Conservative Rabbis. Ask U. S. Action
on Aqaba, Arabia, Shipping Freedom

KIAMESHA LAKE, N. Y.,
(JTA)—The 57th annual con-
vention of the Rabbinical As-
sembly of America, central body
of the Conservative rabbinate,
concluded with a resolution
calling on President Eisenhow-
er "to extend the parolee pro-
visions of our immigration laws
to include Egyptian Jews at this
time." The resolution drew at-
tention to the "desperate plight
of the Egyptian Jews who have
been systematicallSr plundered,
impoverished, and forced to flee
Nasser dictatorship." -
In another resolution, the
convention- called on the United
States Government to exercise
its influence • so that Israel can
have use of the Suez Canal and
the Gulf of Aqaba, pointing out
that those "promises, which
have been made or implied by
the President of the U. S. must
be fulfilled if we are not to
yield to the blackmailing 'de-
vices of Arab potentates who
flirt with Communism."
The convention reiterated its
recognition "of the full rights
of all citizens • to equal opportu-
nities for - education, employ.,
ment and housing, without re-
gard to color or creed," adding
that "events of the past year
have dramatized the more fla-
grant abuse of these rights in
certain sections of - the South."
Rabbi Aaron H. Blumenthal,
of Mount Vernon, was elected
president of the Assembly.
The convention appealed to
President Eisenhower to "ab-
rogate immediately" the
United States treaty leasing
the Dharhan air base from
Saudi Arabia. The plea was
based on Saudi Arabia's "fla-
grant discrimination against
Christian religious services
and . American personnel of
the Jewish faith.
.` 11.e relationship of the syna-
gogue to- other Jewish organiza-
tions in the American commu-
nity was debated by several
prominent rabbis at one of the
sessions.
Rabbi Israel Goldstein, pres,i-
dent of the American Jewish
Congress; argued that the syna-
gogue "does not have its former
all-inclusive_ scope" and that "a
great part, of its erstwhile prob-
lems have been taken over by •
specialized agencies — philan-
thropic, educational, Zionist and
those which d e Pe n d Jewish
rights here and abroad." He in-
sisted that there ,"is no use try-
ing to turn back the clock in
an effort to restore the sover-
eignty of the synagogue in all
these areas."

He suggested the synagogue
must "content itself with the
role of inspiring, aiding and fa-
cilitating the response to the
deserving claims of Jewish ne-,
cessity." The field of Jewish
education, however, he said, is
the "very eSsence of the syna-
gogue's aim and purpose."
Rabbi Abraham Feldman,
president of the • Synagogue
Council of America, held, how-
ever, that "there are no secular
institutions in Jewish commu-
nity life"—only "specializations
in the performance of various
functionS of Jewish religious
life." None of these functions,
he went on, "is outside the pe-
riphery of the synagogue" and
that "they are not competitors
of the synagogue but welcoine
co-workers in Jewish commu-
nity life."
Rabbi Morris Adler, of De-
troit, presided at a convention
testimonial dinner tendered to
Rabbi Max Arzt.
Delegates from Detroit in-
cluded Rabbis Adler and Milton

agogue; Moses Lehrman, Bnai

Shinwell Denounces
Ike's Suez Statement

LONDON, (JTA)—The Labor
party's forthright M.P., Eman-
uel Shinwell, bluntly denounced
as "foolish" President Eisen-
hower's statement on Israel's
Suez transit rights.
"Mr.- Eisenhower says and
does some very foolish things,"
the M.P. declared in Commons
debate, "and one of the most
foolish,.. surely, is the statement
that . Israel is' entitled to put a
ship through Suez but on no
account to use force."
"Is anything so absurd?" he
asked. "Egwpt will obviously try
to prevent it and will Use force.
Israel mustn't use force but take
the ship back. Retreat, retreat,
retreat — all along the line.
That's not a policy that gets
any where."

Lithuanian Brothers
Reunited in the U. S.

• Benzion Gotz, 14, hugs his
younger - brother Amos, 8, at
Idlewild Airport on his arrival
from Lithuania, where he had
been cared for by a Gentile
woman during World War II
and later by relatives, after
his parents were deported for
slave labor during the Nazi
occupation. His father, Saul
Gotz, arranged for Benzion
to be smuggled out of the
Kaunas, Lithuania, ghetto
when Benzion was only three
months old, and to be hidden
by a Gentile woman. After
liberation the parents came
to the U.S. as DPs, and later
located their son in Lithuania.
Following issuance of a visa
by the American Consul in
Moscow, the child came to
the U.S. with the assistance
of United Hias Service, the
agency which - this year will
benefit from the UJA Emer-
gency Rescue Campaign Fund.
Benzion's arrival coincided
with Amos' eighth birthday.

Study New Plan for Quick Energy

HAIFA (JTA)—A new plan
to obtain energy by harnessing
the differences in temperature
and vapor pressure of the Dead
Sea at the surface and at the
depth of 100 feet is now be-
ing studied by the Israeli Min-
istry of Development.
The idea was offered by
David Wittenberg, a Haifa en-
gineer who has made a de-
.tailed study of the possibilities.
He reported that there is a
minimum '20 degree difference
in water temperature and a
substantial difference "in spe-
cific gravity pressures at the
two levels.
The difference in vapor pres-
sures, he said, makes the Dead
Sea potentially an "inexhaust-
ible source" of energy. He al-so
disclosed that if standard tech-
niques of exploiting the Dead
Sea brine by vacuum could be
applied, the brine could also
be an inexpensive source of
refrigeration.
The Dead Sea Bromine Com-
pany plans to install a small
installation, based on the engi-
neer's ideas, for an experi-
mental cooling plan at Sdom.

VIENNA (-3-.TA) — A report
from Poland says that. the Jew-
ish community of Lodz finds
it necessary "to carry on a
struggle" to guard its privil-
eges in regard to Jewish cul-
tural matters, and must do all
in its power "to uncover all
evidences cif anti-Semitism,"
The report quotes leaders of
the Jewish community of Lodz
to this effect. Published in Die
Folkshtimme, the only Jewish
newspaper in Poland, the re-
port says that at a meeting - of
the Jewish Cultural Associa-
tion in Lodz, leading members
of the Association called for
"fewer words and more ac-
tion" in defending Jewish in-
terests.
The leaders also demanded
that more aid be given to Jews
repatriated from the Soviet
Union and that the Jewish
community should concern it-
self with the needs of the reli-
gious Jews, Jewish education
and the 'care of aged Jews.

PARIS (JTA) — Israel used
a new, "sensational" guided mis-
sile against Egyptian tanks dur-
ing the Sinai campaign last fall,
according to Gen. Noel Daun, of
the French Air Force.
The weapon, conveying . a-
conventional, 12-pound charge,
"can destroy any tank or ar-
mored car," Gen. Daun told
newsmen, declaring it had a rec-
ord of 90 percent of - hits. The
missile, known as the S-S 10,
was fired by Israeli Army men
who had been trained by French
instructors.
From Tel Aviv it is reported
that Israel is taking steps to
balance Soviet shipments of
MIG-17 jet _fighters. to Egypt
and Syria which are superior to
even the 'latest Mysteres ac-
quired by the Jewish State,
Shimon__ Peres, director general
of the DeferiSe Ministry, told a
meeting of the Iirael Foreign
Press AssOciation. _
The Israeli official charged'
that the Egyptians were recon-
structing military bases in -the
Sinai Peninsula and the Gaza
Strip. Nevertheless, he reported
that since the Sinai campaign,
Israel has had its greatest period
of quiet along the borders.
