peared to be a question of word-
ing and timing.
Israel wanted to be certain
that the wording would be
agreeable to Washington as well
as to the opposition within the
Israel Cabinet. Spokesman for

ago.
Meyerhoff, who resides and
maintains his offices in Balti-
more, succeeds Robert Szold,
who will remain as chairman of
the board of PEC. Meyerhoff
was elected to his new post at
a regular meeting of the cor-
poration's board of directors in-
New York.
For many years an active
leader in every program of as-
sistance to Israel, Meyerhoff is
chairman of the National Cam-
paign Cabinet .of the United
Jewish Appeal, and a member
of the national executive com-
mittee of the - Israel Bonds Or-
ganization. In his native Balti-

discounted reports of any Cabi-
net crisis.
Richards, returning from his
tour, made a nation-wide radio
and television address in which
he refrained from listing any
specific commitments made by
the Arab countries he visited.
He refused to say at a State
Department press conference
whether he had entered any
commitment to provide mili-
tary or economic aid to Israel
as part of any understanding
on the Eisenhower doctrine
asserting that any statement
on the matter should • come
from Israel.
It was learned, meanwhile,
that Israel Ambassador Abba
Eban met with William Roun-
tree, Assistant Secretary of
State, to discuss certain mat-
ters outstanding from Ambas-
sador Richards' visit to Israel.
Further talks will continue,
The envoy said that the State
Department decided to include
Israel on the Richards' itiner-
ary after an invitation was re-
ceived from Israel. He also said
that on his tour he had avoided
discussions of such "regional
disputes" as the Gillf of Aqaba,
Arab refugees, Jordan River
rights and similar conflicts.
He expressed the opinion that
the- Eisenhower Doctrine might
promote an atmosphere con-
ducive to ultimate settlement of
the Arab-Israel disputes.
Despite Richards' flat denial
of any commitments, informed
sources in Washington said he
had made commitments to send
Saudi Arabia a considerable
quantity of tanks, artillery
pieces and jet fighters. The same
sources said the - commitment
had been approved by President
Eisenhower as a move to bolster
King Hussein in Jordan by
strengthening Hussein's ally,
King Saud.
(A JTA report from Jerusa-
lem states that the Israel Cabi-
net decided not to discuss for
the time being a proposed Israel
statement on the. Eisenhower
Doctrine. It is understood that
Washington is dissatisfied with
the wording of such a statement
offered by Premier Ben-Gurion
and that the State Department
sent through Ambassador Abba
Eban its own wording 'for the
Cabinet to accept or reject.)
In the United Nations, Syria
requested an early meeting of
the Security Council, accusing
Israel of violating the Syrian-
Israel armistice agreement by
erecting a bridge across the
Huleh - swamps in the demili-
tarized zone.
UN Truce Supervisors had
previously ruled that the span
does not constitute a military
artery as the Syrians had
charged. Col. Byron V. Leary,
acting chief of staff of UNTSO,
left for Damascus for further
talks with Syria.
Rafik Asha, head of the Syrian
delegation, conferred with Sec-
retary General Hammarskjold
and sent a letter to Henry Cabot
Lodge, president of the Security
Council, demanding the Council
meet to discuss Syria's com-
plaint.
Meanwhile, Abba Eban con-
ferred with Hammarskjold in a
"courtesy call," which observers
said was used to discuss the
Syrian complaint and Hammar-
skjold's recent Jerusalem visit
