cently opened the season of the
Teen Softball League at Sugar
Field, 7 Mile and Tracey.
Scores were Del Monicos over
Vulcans, 24-9; Viscounts over
Counts, 16-2; . Imperials over
Princetons, 15-7; and Diablos
over Se Villes, 14-6. Bob Repitor
is head umpire of the league.
Games this Sunday will pit

Gerald Powers, a 16-year-old
Cooley High School junior, was
last week presented with five
gold keys in the Scholastic
Writing Award contest.
Gerald, the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Arthur Frayne, of 15026
Hartwell, won three keys in
the Southeastern Michigan
Scholastic contest in the po-
etry, essay and literary cate-
gories.
Two of the articles, the liter-
ary and the poetry pieces, won
honors in the national contest,
in which 100,000 high school
students submitted entries.
"Wash of Symbols," the lit-
erary article which is an essay
on "The Old Man of the 'Sea,"
will be reproduced in Scholas-
tic Magazine in the near fu-
ture. Gerald received $50 for
the article.
Although Gerald participates
in a few school groups, he
spends most of his time writ-
ing, mostly poetry.
Michael Freeman, 17, son of Dr.
and Mrs. Michael W. Freeman,
1810 Wellesley Drive, won a
first place Scholastic award for
a formal essay. He also received
honorable mentions in the na-
tional contest for a senior ex-
pository article and senior
drama plus commendation for
a senior formal essay.
Michael's award-winning en-
tries were written while he at-
tended Cranbrook School in
Bloomfield Hills, Mich. He is
presently a student at Harvard
College. Since he was unable to
be present for -the awards pre-
s e n t at i o n, his eight-year-old
nephew, Michael Shwayder, of
18935 Fairfield, accepted the
prize for him.
