Thousands of daily visitors to the UN, however, never fail to notice directly across the UN compound at First Avenue the imposing sign between two tenements which reads: "United Nations: We demand the withdrawal of all Soviet forces and free elections. Help us! The peoples of Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Hun- gary, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Romania — Assem- bly of Captive Nations." Rising above the mammoth sign are 10 flag-pQ.les, one, fly- Mg the Stars and Stripes at full mast, and nine, of the "Captive Natiohs", flying a_t half mast. The Assembly of these "Cap- tive Nations" is composed of escapees of the nine "conquer- ed" states who have organized themselves into "Government in Exile" and who meet yearly in a minor "General Assembly" as a protest against the UN for tolerating an aggressor as one- of its members. A voluminous annual report, containing state- ments by exiled leaders, is pub- lished and submitted- to all member states. The UN dele- gateS, however, beset with prob- lems, give little heed to their protestations and pleas for help. The exiled leaders hold that other nations .enjoying freedom and liberty today may find themselves in a similar situa- tion. Thus, the bitter fate that has been Israel's for nearly 2,000 years — wanderers among na- tions without a homeland — has in our age befallen the peoples of these nine countries. The U.S., which professes to espouse the cause of the free peoples of the world, is doing ,very little to alleviate the plight of these refugees. Why does Washington remain . silent?
