Friday, May 10,
CM
Jewish communities through-
out the world celebrated Israel's
ninth anniversary during the
past week.
A proclamation by President.
Itzhak Ben-Zvi reviewing his
country's achievements inaugu-
rated the observances in Israel
proper.
Prime Minister David Ben-
Guri6n emphasized that the two
major issues facing Israel are
the country's defense and the
settlement of 100,000' immi-
grants this year.
(Renewed attacks upon Isra-
eli fishermen by Syrian troops
disturbed the celebrations and
demands were made upon the
UN Truce Supervision Organi-
zation by Foreign Minister
Golda Meir for a cessation of
the attacks. Four Israeli fisher-
men were wounded on May 5.)
(Mrs. Meir also found it nec-
essary, at an Independence Day
celebration, to attack Soviet
Russia for supplying arms to
Nasser).
At an Independence Day re-
ception given in Jerusalem by
President Ben Zvi to the dip-
lomatic corps, the French Am-
bassador Pierre Gilbert, dean
of the corps, delivered greet-
ings in perfect Hebrew. He
hailed Israel's independence
and paid personal tribute to
- the President for his achieve-
ments in cementing ties of
friendship between Israel and
other countries. Among the
diplomats present were the
representatives of: France,
United States, USSR, Argen- .
tina, B r i t a i n, Switzerland,
Brazil, Denmark, Australia,
Belgium, Uruguay, Sweden,
Mexico, Yugoslavia, Holland,
Hungary, Finlan d, Burma,
Austria, Greece, Canada, Italy
and Czechoslovakia.
The traditional - Memorial Day,
which 'precedes Independence
Day, was observed all over Is-
rael. Homage was paid to - the
dead of the War of Liberation
and the Sinai campaign. in syn-
agogues and at military ceme-
teries, the relatives and friends
of Israeli war dead prayed and
wept for those who had paid
, the supreme sacrifice to guaran-
tee the safety of the Jewish
State, SpeCial services were
held at the site of _all battles.
In Tel Aviv sirens signalled a
two-minute period of silence.
As their wails died away, buses
drew to a halt and passengers
alighted to stand at attention,
all traffic halted and all walk
ceased. All public buildings
flew the national flag at half
mast.
In Jerusalem, where govern-
ment buildings were also half
masted, schoolchildren visited

Half a million Israelis lined
the main streets of Tel Aviv
to cheer a five-mile-long mili-
tary parade.
The parade, marking Israel's
ninth Independence Day was the
largest ever held. The specta-
tors, likewise; were the most
numerous in the short history
of the state.
President Ben-Zvi, Premier
Ben-Gurion and Army Chief of
Staff Maj. Gen. Moshe Dayan
stood on the reviewing stand to
take the salute of the marching
units. Gen. Dayan was easily
the hero of the day and spec-
tators, shouted themselves
hoarse with cheers of "Moshe,
Moshe" whenever they caught
sight of . him.
Although every unit of the
Israeli forces was cheered
mightily as it strode past, par-
ticularly the women's coM-
panies, the crowd went wild
as a special section of tanks,
armored cars and artillery
captured from the Egyptians
in the Sinai battles rolled into
view. The "booty column" was
led off by St, 'net-made tanks
of all classes, Russian troop
carriers and other vehicles.
• Most of the captured artillery
was Czech or British-manu-
factured. Among the captured
armor were eight AmeriCan
Sherman tanks.
Israeli armor also _included
medium Shermans as well as
the French artillery and
tanks. Scores of tanks and ar-
mored vehicles spearheaded
the parade through Tel Aviv.
They were followed by an in-
fantry column in which cadet
officers were the first contin-
gent.
At the _Mall in Central Park,
New York, 40,000 people hailed
Israel's anniversary. Mayor Rob-
ert F. Wagner and Ambassador
Abba Eban were the principal
speakers. message from Vice
President Richard Nixon an-

Should Show Aiabs,' Salmon Says
A firm declaration of faith in
the permanency of Israel key,
noted an address by Col. Katriel
P. Salmon, military attache of
the Israel embassy in Washing-
ton and main speaker at the
Israel Independence Day cele-
bration, held here Sunday in
the Mumford High School audi-
torium..
That Israel's ninth birthday
finally will convey to the. Arabs
the indestructibility of the Jew-
ish State, was the hope- ex
pressed by Salm4an, a fifth gen-
eration Israeli and veteran- of
the War of Independence.
The--Israeli colonel inspired
optimism _ for - future Arab-
Israel cooperation by quoting --
from'a letter to an American-
Jewish leader written in 1919
by Feisal, acknowledged lead-
er of Arab nationalism.,
grandfather of the present
king of Iraq and brother of
the grandfather of, King Hus-
sein of Jordan.
In the missive, Feisal said,
"The Arabs and Jews are cou-
sins in race, struggling with
similar problems." He ex-
pressed deepest sympathy with
the Zionist movement, calling
Zionist conferences of the time
"proper" and wished the Jews
"a most hearty welcome home."
As is the Arab, "the Jewish
movement is national and not
imperialistic," .the leader wrote.
The Arabs' . present contra-
dictory ideology "is sponsored
by foreign imperialism," Sal-
mon declared.
Salmon based his speech on
three Hebrew words related to
the Independence Day number,
nine. The wor ds, "brother"
"they will" and "they came"
not only. fit into the numerical
scheme but are the three most
prominent features in Israel's
nine years of existence, Salmon
asserted.
"With a spirit of brother-
hood and solidarity by the
remnants of a people with a.
will to prevail articulated in
a .honiecoming," Israel has
persisted to exist, he said.
The Independence Day cele-
bration; sponsored by the. city's
. Jewish Community and Zionist
Councils, opened wjth the pres-
entation of colors by Julius
Rosenwald Post of the Ameri-
can, Legion and Harbonim. and
Labor Zionist Youth.

tional ardhems were. sung by
Leah Koven. Rabbi Benjamin
H. Gorrelick delivered the in-
vocation and conducted the au-
dien•e in responsivle reading of
a prayer for peace.
