PHILADELPHIA. — The 69th
annual meeting of the Jewish
Publication Society of America,
held here all day Sunday, at the
Warwick Hotel, heard an appeal
from its president, Edwin Wolf
2nd, for the enrollment of 100,-
000 American Jews as members
of the society.
Outlining the great contribu-
tions made by the JPS during
the past few years, Wolf stated
that while there are constant
membership i n or eases and
marked advances in book sales,
they represent only a fraction
of the Jews of America. The
"success story," he stated; there-
fore needs implementation, since
there are hundreds of thousands
of Jewish homes that are with-
out Jewish books.
The JPS president reported
that the membership had in-
creased from 88'74 in 1955 to
9419 in 1956 and the sale of
Bibles and books from 114,000
to 124,000. He acclaimed the
work of Dr. Harry Orlinsky
and his associates who are en-
gaged in the preparation of a
new translation of the Hebrew
Bible, and congratulated the
editor of the society, Dr. Solo-
mon Grayzel, on his having
been selected for the annual
Weil Literary Award of the
Jewish Welfare Board.
Judge Louis E. Levinthal, who
presented the report of the pub-
lication committee, and other
officers of the society, joined in
congratulating Dr. Grayzel on
the honors accorded him na-
tionally.
Judge Levinthal reported on
the important publications due
this year and in 1958, including
Israel President Itzhak Ben-
Zvi's portrayal of Jewish Orien-
tal communities.
Supplementing Wolf's call
for the enrollment of 100,000
new members, Lesser Zuss-
man, executive secretary of
the JPS, urged a "vigorous
membership campaign to help
decrease the cost of printing"

An encouraging report also
was presented by the JPS treas-
urer; Myer Fe4 nstein.
The society re-elected Wolf
as president for a fourth term
and elected three Detroiters.
Philip Slomovitz was re-
elected an honorary national
vice-president and Judge The-
odOre Levin and Leonard N.
Simons were re-elected mem-
bers of the board of trustees
for three-year terms.

Levinthal was renamed chair-

In an address to the annual
meeting on "NeW Light on the
Eternal Book," Prof. E. A.
Speiser of the University of
Pennsylvania• outlined the im-
portance of the new Bible
translated undertaken by JPS.
He declared that Bible trans-
lation can never be a finished
project. The Bible, he empha-
sized, is not an abstract of le-
galism but of idealism tested
by experience.
While the translation is "al-
ways a thankless and hazardous
job," Dr. Speiser said that the
work of modem scholars is now
greatly aided because "we now
know more about the ancient
world and can come much
closer to the Bible context." He
stated that in view of numerous
errors "a new Jewish Publica-
tion Society version had to
come." He devoted his address
to explanations of numerous
mistranslations and explained
how the translator does justice
to complex situations by illu-

WASHINGTON (JTA) —
French Premier Guy Mollet said
that Israel "can count upon the
aid of France" to ensure that
her right is respected. He
stressed "the warm friendship
uniting Israel and France" in
a message to the national con-
vention of the Women's Division
of the American Jewish Con-
gress now taking place here.
The message, which was read
to the 650 delegates at the
convention by French Ambas-
sador M. Herve Alphand, said:
"It is important for all the free
'peoples caring for justice and
democracy to show their solid-
arity with. Israel. It is important
that world opinion realize that
the very principles of inter-
national law are involved in
the settlement of the problems
facing Israel, be it that of the
free passage of its ships through
the Suez Canal, the free navi-
gation in the Straits of Tiran
and in the Gulf of Aqaba, or,
even more so, of the general
peace settlement in the Near
East to which it is entitled."
The convention was also ad-
