Bonds Build Electric Lamp Factory 10=Year-Old Quiz
Winner, R. StroM,
Back to Normal

Izram Electric Products Industry Ltd., founded in Jeru-
salem a few months ago with the aid of funds derived from
the sale of State of Israel Bonds, manufactures electric light
bulbs at the rate of more than 10,000 a day. The Izram factory,
which is operated on an assembly line basis, employs sixty-five
production workers. Much of the plant's intricate machinery
was developed by Izram's engineering staff, and the quality
of Izram's lamps ranks with those of American and European
manufacture. Shown above is Fanny Abolania, who immigrated
to Israel seven years ago, as she. feeds glass stems into an
Izram machine which places and solders filament wires in the
lamps. Further plant expansion is planned with the assistance
of Israel Bonds.

To Probe Prejudice
in Educational Texts

Three institutions of higher
learning have undertaken ex-
tensive research studies to de-
termine the extent and nature
of biased material in Protestant
and Jewish educational texts.
Analyses will also be made of
training programs for religious
educators.
These research projects — in
which the American Jewish
Committee is cooperating — are
under the direction of Yale
University, Southern Methodist
University and Dropsie College.
A number of Catholic groups
also have initiated studies in
some of these areas. The find-
ings will take about three years
to compile and provide new un-
derstanding of the inter-group
relations content in religious
educational material and teach-
er training programs.

Ten-year-old genius Robert
Strom, who mystified and cap-
tivated audiences throughout
the world with his scientific
prowess on television's $64,000
Question, has settled back again
to enjoy a reasonably normal
life.
After becoming TV's greatest
quiz money earner by winning
$192,000 on the
program, Rob,
as he is called
by his family,
stopped short
of the $256,000
he was eligible
to try to win.
His father,
Albert, a
teacher in
M anhattan's
Rob Strom
Chelsea Voca-
tional High School, thought, that
the strain of the many weeks
Rob spent before the TV cam-
eras was becoming • too great,
and Rob agreed with him by not
continuing.
While Rob became the na-
tional celebrity, - his . brother,
Stephen, is regarded as even
more of a genius by his par-
ents. He has lectured exten-
sively before learned socities
at New York's Hayden Plane-
tarium on all astronomy sub-
jects.
Stephen is named after the
late Stephen S. Wise, famous
rabbi of the Free Synagogue. It
happened that when Mrs. Strom
thought she would be childless,
She approached several adoption
agencies, but was refused a
child because the parents were
of different religions. . (Mr.
Strom is a Swedish Lutheran
who professes no religion; Mrs.
Strom is a Jewess).
Then they went to the agency
administered by Mrs. Wise, wife
of the rabbi. They were prom-
ised a child, but before arrange-
ments were made, Mrs. • Strom
became pregnant. In gratitude,
the Stroms named the• child
after Rabbi. Wise.
Both boys, although scholarly
and scientifically inclined, still
take time to engage in recrea-
tion, and Rob, a fifth grader,
plays baseball with his class-
mates. •
The boys' parents have agreed
to let Rob and Stephen choose
their own religious faith. They
have done nothing to influence
their choice. •

NY Home for Aged Gets $1 1/4 Million Bequest

For nearly . 40 years, three
members of a prominent Pitts-
burg steel family named Frank,
cherished the dream of estab-
lishing a pavilion for aged per-
sons. This dream will shortly
come to realization as the re-
sult of a unique legacy naming
the Home for Aged & Infirm
Hebrews of New York, 121 W.
105th St., as beneficiary of a
sum of at least $1,250,000, it
was announced May 1.
Miss Amy P. Frank designated
the Home as an "irrevocable"
appointee of her estalge. In re-
turn, the Home has given her
assurance that it will plan to
construct "with reasonable dis-
patch" a pavilion for 'the resi-
dential care of elderly persons
that will bear the name of
one or more members of the
Frank family.

To fill priority requests from
Israel for new American text
and reference books, CARE
needs contributions totalling
$800 for three educational in-
stitutions.
Though many more Israeli
training centers are on the wait-
ing list for various types of
technical books, the priority
rating of need is based upon
information from Israeli gov-
ernment education officials, Pat-
ricia Freeman, director of the
Book Division of CARE self-
help program explained.
The institutions are Public
Health Training Center Li-
brary, for post-graduate train-
ing of public health workers;
Social Workers Library, Naz-
areth, serving teachers, social
workers and probation officers;
and School of Nursing, Shearey
Zadech Hospital, Jerusalem; for
up-to-date nursing textbooks to
improve training standards.
Contributions in any amount,
to be applied toward these pro-
jects, should be sent to CARE
Book Fund, 660 First Ave., New
York 16, N. Y., and clearly
marked "for Israel."
Donors of $50 or more may
specify the institution,. On all
contributions of $10 or more,
the donors' name is placed on
,a book plate inside each vol-
ume provided.
